"I tell the truth no matter how brutal it may come across. Really catches people out which is quite satisfying ![]() Would you really though? My mum has dementia and she’s forever saying “I’ve done that” “I’ve been there” etc etc. and for us to say no you haven’t mum really stresses her out. To just agree with her is easier and doesn’t harm anyone.

"Is it ever okay to lie?" It depends on the reason, if it’s to spare someone’s feelings without covering your own arse then yes. For example if someone had a bad haircut and were feeling self conscious, would you tell them the truth it’s bad and make them feel worse or tell a white lie and say it looks alright?

"I tell the truth no matter how brutal it may come across. Really catches people out which is quite satisfying ![]() Towards the end of her life my mum forgot a lot of things or remembered them differently. Telling her she was wrong just upset her. What would have been the point in that

"I think you should also consider very carefully if telling the truth is necessary and keeping quiet might be a better option. Also just because you think it doesn't mean it's true. " I do agree with this one. However, omitting the truth depending on the situation can just be as bad. But I agree, an opinion doesn't mean it's the truth ![]()

"Lying isn’t just ok, it’s a good thing to do Lying shows you’ve thought about what you’ve done, realised it’s bad, and you want to do something about it Telling the truth is lazy. It’s like not wearing deodorant. It’s inconsiderate. It’s shows you couldn’t give a fuck about how your actions effect people Always lie " Wow i pity the people around you. How could they trust anything you say?

"Yes, I've lost count how many times I've told my eldest the cup of tea he's made me perfect. Told people I'm busy because I don't want to go out and don't really want to explain why I don't want to. My biggest one, is replying I'm good thanks when asked how I am. We all lie, especially those who say they never do " I never lie. Lying gets you nowhere other than in someone's knickers

"Is it ever okay to lie?" If you’re a bloke and someone ask if you wank. A surprising number of blokes claim not to wank. But we shouldn’t judge them so, it’s ok to tell lie.

"Is it ever okay to lie?" As with all things there is a sliding scale with extremes at both end... Was there a specific example /situation you were thinking of?

"Is it ever okay to lie? As with all things there is a sliding scale with extremes at both end... Was there a specific example /situation you were thinking of? " No just thinking. Guess I was thinking about the shadowy line of when we take over getting to decide what’s in someone else’s best interest or not as justification of the lie and where that sits - like the dementia examples above, I accept, but when we police what we’re willing to be truthful about and then wrap it up or actually no, *believe* it to be in the other’s best I retests to not know, aren’t we taking away their consent and autonomy?

"I tell the truth no matter how brutal it may come across. Really catches people out which is quite satisfying ![]() Exactly this. I now lie to my Dad very often. I'm going to lie to him in the morning, probably the first thing we speak about. He'll be really surprised I'm there so early. He'll tell me I shouldn't have got up so early to drive over. I'll say "oh it's okay" when in reality I'll have stayed in a hotel. Why? Because if I say I've stayed in a hotel, he'll get all agitated and ask why I didn't stay at his house. His house with stairs. Whilst I'm sat in my wheelchair, having the conversation. So yes, lying in certain circumstances is fine.
