The levels of friendship

Did you know that in Arabic, there are 12 levels of friendship?

For every level of friendship, there is an Arabic word to describe it.

?1.Sadeeq - a true friend; someone who doesn't befriend you for an ulterior motive. The word "Sadeeq" is commonly translated as truth, so honesty and loyalty is at the core of this friendship.

2.Anees - someone with whom you're really comfortable and familiar with.

3.Zameel - someone you have a nodding acquaintance with.

4.Jalees - someone you're comfortable sitting with for a period of time.

5.Sameer - you have good conversation with them.

6.Sahib - someone who's concerned for your well-being.

7.Rafeeq - someone you can depend upon.

8.Khaleel - an intimate friend; someone whose presence makes you happy.

9.Na jiyy - a confidant; someone you trust deeply.

10.Nadeem- a drinking companion (just tea) that you might call when you're free.

11.Safiyy - your best friend; someone you've chosen over other friends.

12.Qareen - someone who's inseparable from you; you know how they think (and vice versa).

Which type of friend are you typically? Do you have friends in most categories? Obviously one person can cover more than one category too. Are you a good friend? What’s important to you in friendship.

Talk to me about friendship.

I don’t think it’s set out as levels indicating a hierarchy of importance, more the nuance of differing types and thrusts of friendship. I love the richness of the language to describe these!

I knew a guy once called Sameer, conversely, his conversation skills were pretty poor lol

I have 1 or 2 from that list, someone I'm comfortable sitting with for a period of time, and a couple of Sameer friends who I'm able to have a good chat with

My friends are mostly 3 and 10, I have one no 1 and only one 12...that's Mr N of course.

I don't know what type of friend I am probably my 3 and 10 people would say the same about me and so would my no 1 and 12.

Length of friendship is very important to me, over a decade, over 2 decades. I’m very wary of people who’s friendships seem to change every year or two.

I have a core of life long friends who I listen to on the most important things and would hope to never lose contact with . A wider group of around 12 that occasionally change and up to 50 acquaintances

I think I have friends in every category. As time has gone on, friendships/relationships have changed and evolved. I was once told in life, you only really have a handful of friends but I guess we will have many during our lifetime just in different guises

Interesting. There are five of us that have known each other over 35 years. One of them I am closer to and tell her everything first.

We where all single girls when we met. We are now all grandma's. We have been through everything together. Marriages, divorce, children, miscarriage affairs. Everything you can.imagine.

I guess we really are like sisters.

I have some from the other categories as well
