How am I supposed to keep up with the lingo? Is lingo even a word I'm allowed to use? Yesterday my son mentioned roadmen. I still don't understand his garbled explanation for a word I've never heard before.

What else don't I know?

What else don't you know?

You have to bear in mind that culturally the rest of the UK, with maybe the exception of Birmingham, lags behind London in terms of slang, among other things.

There's non-londoners only now learning of words that I was using in the mid 2000's

Since I've been in the North West some people are still wearing clothing styles up here that haven't been seen in London since 2010.

It is _sometimes_ used in a specific way to describe Black men wearing trackies and a hoodie or people with a pouch. Or that speak slang. It’s one of those microaggressions that if you know you know. But I’d say someone that’s road lives a very particular life. I wouldn’t describe them as chavs at all but I know the term is used in that way too. Blah blah blah

My favourite thing about the _slang_ of the youth is the fact that it is a mix of so many different cultures and variations of English. It’s massively influenced by Black cultures around the world. It’s a variation of English. A way of communicating. A language that you slip into around familiar people or strangers that get it. When you don’t speak any language you feel excluded. But actually it’s rather beautiful. I hate more than anything people that try and pretend that variations of English are less than or are annoying just because they don’t speak it. And fab is one of those places but it’s a general thing I’ve found in my life. It’s why even though you can be born here you still get the ‘you speak so well’ when you’re code switching Etc etc.

Ostensibly, in its most lewd definition, it stands for, ‘Suckers Idolizing Mediocre Pussy’.

However, the word itself historically has other, altogether less vulgar connotations I.e it is an abbreviated denotation for a simpleton.

Interestingly, from what I can ascertain, none of its usages have ever been in a positive sense.

But the point of language is that it’s used to communicate, generally, with people that do understand it. The obvious limit of this type of language exists only with people who are unable to codeswitch. Which is not because of the language but because of other social factors that are likely impacting their education (where they learn ‘good’ English). I’ve seen fabbers communicate in Spanish with other people and I have no idea what they’re saying, and perhaps I’m excluded, but they’re communicating with people that DO understand. If they did that in conversation with me that’s entirely different. But this language, or this variation of the English language, is great. And it’s great because in many ways it actually transcends geography.

"There are so many words! I usually Google or urban dictionary it

Heard simp and rizz recently!

Mr

Simp is an old one, surely?

The modern employment is a decidedly vulgar acronym denoting a (usually male) who lavishes all their affections on a decidedly unappreciative woman.

That's an interesting way to define it as it makes the male seem very hard-done by. And the woman a bitch. I've always seen it as men who suck up to women in the unlikely hope of action.

Simp is an important one because it’s common and guys need to be called out on it. Many don’t even realise they’re doing it

"My favourite thing about the _slang_ of the youth is the fact that it is a mix of so many different cultures and variations of English.

Another way of looking at how you excellently described it is that anyone outside the little bubble that understands the slang is excluded and has no clue what is being said … which makes it a very ineffective way of communicating. "

What the word has come to mean because of its (mis)use by particular groups, yeah. Actually goes back to my original point about the term having been used in microaggressive ways. But it would be wrong of me to pretend that meanings of words can’t evolve so perhaps it does mean this to you and your children but not to me or my peers (or my 15 year old brother). And in a way that’s the beauty of language.

There’s something to be said about the way that this variation of language has come from certain cultures but has been adopted by a completely different one. And in the process words have changed meaning. But I cba on fab. Maybe a masters topic
