I was very young when he was a player. I do, however, remember how the players of the great 70’s Welsh side were seen as absolute gods here.

I do think us Welsh (and Celts) do emotion and sentimentally a bit differently to more pragmatic parts of the world. Benny, JJ, Merv the Swerve, JPR - all legends and spoken of in hushed tones. All gone now

JPR was tough to the point on insanity at a time when there were all sorts of nefarious goings on in games. Look up his tackle versus France in 1976. Awesome and mad (and illwgal today)!

A friend of mine was playing rugby for his medical school when JPR was at Mary's. Apparently matches against them were horrendous, they'd kick off, a Mary's player would catch the ball, pass it to JPR who would score a try. Repeat for 80 minutes.....

As an Englishman he was a thorn in our side. Never lost a match to us I don't think. Legend. Hard. Aggressive and played well into his 50s. A surgeon too. What a guy. RIP.

And British Junior Tennis Champion in 1966. He was good enough to have gone pro.

Remember watching him play for Tondu seconds when he was in his late 50s. Played back row in that game. Was aggressive and as elusive as he was when playing for Wales.
