If online dating or using dating apps has shown me one thing, it’s that everyone is morphing into the same person.

Every profile I swipe past has the same hair, the same tattoos, the same poses, the same nose piercing, the same clothes…

What’s going on? Where do I find someone unique?!

Join an esoteric special interest group. The interesting people aren't trying to look like everyone else.

It also makes people disposable. We reduce people to a few pictures, a half arsed bio and a left or right swipe

Personally I think everyone’s unique if you spend the time to get to know them. If you aren’t putting any effort into that, everyone’s going to seem the same.

I know people that will have 100s of matches left on read complaining they can’t find anyone. You get out what you put in. Low effort gets low effort.

It's so ubiquitous though. My daughter at uni prides herself on being the only one of her extended social circle not on a dating app. You'd think students in halls would be swimming in a social milieu that facilitated dating, but they're all on dating apps!

Unfortunately with working 6 16 hour shifts a week, dating apps are not only the most convenient but ultimately almost the only way I have to meet new people.

If you weren’t as a busy, but got chatting to a guy doing 6x 16 hour shifts a week, would you bother with him? Or say he’s too busy and move onto the next in the long line of a million matches?

It’s like filtering in here.

Search - brunnete/slim/petite/age40s if you don’t like the first person that pops up, And they’re all similar, where do you go from there?

Putting aside the obvious, which is every human being is unique (even twins), what's more important to you: people whose looks are unique? or people who are unique inside no matter what they look like?

Also, maybe you have a search/filter bias and the pool of people you are checking look the same because they have learnt that to be attractive to others they have more chances or success when they have chosen to go for that look.

I’m assuming they mean the swipe ones, I dunno how happy the mods on here are with us naming them.

And they attract all sorts of lovely people. Nothing “chav” about them and that attitude is the one that probably attracts the type they want to avoid

I feel like there are men that make tattoos and beards their entire personality but based on talking to my fiancé that’s not what she ends up with on the apps. Could be to do with her type, the profiles that she swipes on most often, similar ones come up more and could be to do with location, where we live in North London.

If your looking for an actual relationship I'd say sites that cost membership for men and women rather than the free or cheap sites.

I can't name sites as I might get into trouble with admin .

But!.. I would say that what you've described isn't just on online but in real life too,

I know you say you work long hours.. but if you've single friends then perhaps go out to places where people socialise

I find this too, although in a completely different age bracket! I notice more that men say the same things and they were pretty boring the first time. (Nights in, nights out FFS) Men have told me they see the same with women. I think several of the free apps just attract the same people because they're well-known and FREE.

I see a bigger range of men (appearance and personality) on an app like Feeld. Or Hinge which has a different approach.

Not sure it has ever been that different. I recently saw a picture of my old school class from when we were 16, so 40 years ago. Most of the people looked very similar (1980's modern romantic look mostly)- well at least had a very similar style of hair, make-up, clothes that would obviously make them out of place today. The boys even all pretty much had the same style of tie knot with the thin end at the front

That’s where I found the highest concentration of weirdos!

I found the best one to be the one that helps a door open and close

Purely because it forces people to put their height and if they have kids or not which is a big filter for me, saves a lot of time chatting to people only to find out they aren’t what your looking for

Believe it or not, the popular one (the fire starter one) has a premium option now. £500 a month I think. Yes. Per month. I hope it comes with a weekly blowjob for that price

"It also makes people disposable.

Unfortunately with working 6 16 hour shifts a week, dating apps are not only the most convenient but ultimately almost the only way I have to meet new people.

I think lots of people find themselves in a similar situation

If you weren’t as a busy, but got chatting to a guy doing 6x 16 hour shifts a week, would you bother with him? Or say he’s too busy and move onto the next in the long line of a million matches?

I think you’ve missed the point of the post… I didn’t say I can’t find anyone. I said everyone looks the same as the last person "

One of the frustrating things about dating apps are the algorithm. They learn which kind of people you swipe right on then show you more and more of the same. Try deleting your account and setting it up again - it kind of wiped the memory and show you a whole new bunch of people. A bit of a pain as you are starting your search from scratch but it does help

That’s actually a misconception of the algorithm, it doesn’t match you to people based on looks

It matches people based on perceived attractiveness based on how many people swipe left or right on you, plus how much you swipe left or right on people of certain attractiveness.

For women it’s almost pointless because guys swipe right on almost everyone

For guys you can somewhat cheat the algorithm by setting your distance to max and setting it to include guys. Lots of thirsty guys will swipe right on you, boosting your ELO (attractiveness score) which in turn shows your profile to more attractive women’s profiles.

I get what you mean OP. You spend so long swiping on people they all begin to look the same. Nothing about them stands out and it’s like you’re in swiping Groundhog Day.

Someone above made a good point that people of a certain age group will by and large have the same dress sense, hairstyles etc, albeit that’s more relevant at school than in our 30s.

A few years ago I joined Classic FM dating for two reasons. First, I believed I would get a massively different pool; second, I believed we’d be more likely to attract due to an obvious shared interest. It didn’t work! ‘Specialising’ gave me a very small pool of people who still looked the same.

I wonder if there are any other niche apps out there that might be a bit better?

Tinder

Bumble

Fb dating

I think there's a few things at play with these types.

We have a ridiculous amount of choice nowadays so people are very easily dismissable. People will hit it off with someone, but if someone else comes along that appears slightly better at first glance, they will cut ties with the previous person to pursue the new one.

We have fake social media accounts setting a statement that makes us feel this entitlement of having a perfect looking partner that earns a shit tonne of money living the perfect life.

Certain looks and trends that are "in" atm.

And this very limited space to sell yourself with your pictures and profile.

So people use the most meta tactics in trying to tick every box to peacock to potential prospects, because if you don't, you'll be overshadowed by the ones that do.

They take pictures in the places you need to be seen at, with expensive designer gear, dressed and looking like whatever is hot at that time.

Which leads to a bunch of samey looking people.

Tie into the fact that alot of these people don't particularly care about real human connections, they care more about how they are perceived by others.

And they want to be perceived as wealthy, with a model looking partner, doing expensive shit, living the perfect life. because they don't want to be outcasted by their tribe.

Personally, I like somebody who I'm attracted to, that shares the same values, who's kind that I can have an amazeballs sex life with that makes me laugh.

All the material shit we can build together.

Imo.

I just don't see that, I must admit. I see men in Lycra, standing next to their bike/motorbike/car/large dog or walking the Moors, doing yoga blah blah. No designer gear.

I'd hate that. I have no time for status symbols and showing off. Perhaps this is an age thing?
