NATURAL DISASTERS!! How prepared are you?

couple, us we him her.

Coming off the back of a week with severe flooding 7 major storms in three months as a country how prepared are we and as individuals should we take more responsibility to prepare?

The small group of islands we live on are fairly fortunate when it comes to huge events such as hurricanes, earthquake, tsunami style flood's, however with the planet evolving and the climate changes both natural and man made it's only a matter of time before we experience a catastrophic event we see regularly on the news in countries all over the world.

Yes we have isolated incidents and people have lot's lives in their hundreds before.

But I think we have definitely become arrogant and complacent thinking it'll never happen to us.

Are you prepared to take care of yourself and your family, could you,do you know how to, what skills do you possess or are you MEH! If it happens it happens????

I (was) friends with a prepper. Im going to him. He did say he would probably shoot me before I got within a mile but if I put a pair of knickers on a flagpole he will know its me and not an everyday marauder after his stores and boat.

"Not prepared whatsoever. I'll deal with it when it happens."

How?

We will mostly have little to no warning.

Do you have any candles in the house in case of power cuts?

Means to cook should gas and electric go?

Spare food,fresh water?

Emergency lighting or torches with spare batteries?

A means to communicate with the outside world should the phone system/internet go down.

It sounds paranoid but when I was growing up we always had matches, candles, torch and batteries in the house.

In years gone most houses had coal fires and stored fuel to provide warmth.

These days we'd be totally fucked I think it would take Less than a couple of days for anarchy to start.

BRIDPORT

On a small scale, I always have tinned food stocks in the cupboard should shopping not be possible either through flood snow or shops being shut because of power outage.

I keep candles and torches with batteries that aren’t flat. A small two hob gas camping stove for very basic cooking and heating some water.

My heating is via a wood burner anyway.

I always have a Jerry can of fuel for the truck.

As I say these minimal things will get me out of trouble short term for a not too cataclysmic situation.

We're probably more prepared for some eventualities than others. Overall I'd say we're under prepared for actual disasters.

What you mean is that by not preparing now, others will have to risk themselves to help you later potentially

I'm not. I'm in contact with local community groups and as long as regular lines of communication are possible, I'll get in touch and pitch in with whatever help is needed. If not, I'll (if possible) find my way to one of the local community centres/ churches/ etc to find others who are looking to coordinate a response.

I know that preparing for some things is beyond my capability.

Because I have done a lot of expedition stuff in the past I have pretty much everything I need to survive a disaster. Water filters (upto P248), multi fuel stoves (plus fuel), cold and wet weather gear, sleeping stuff, solar charging for batteries - the lot. I don’t have much food in though and that’s the only thing I would actually suffer from when it runs out - I have zero skill to hunt anything so I would probably end up starving to death if society failed. But I would be very comfortable whilst I died

People don't even prepare to go on car journeys, ensure that they have blankets and very basic stuff for the possibility if you break down in horrendous weather and or get stuck in snow.

It's not like it doesn't happen it's a semi regular occurrence.

I got trapped in my van overnight once in heavy snow,I always go prepared in the winter now.

Paper Town Central, Essex.

It's very difficult to prepare for a long haul situation, but there are things you can do.

A simple camping stove and dot forget the gas. A pan. A wind up torch. A radio. Cup knife fork spoon and a wooden spoon. A weeks supply of high protein food. Sleeping bag and a tent.

This list might sound like a camping trip.

Yes, it is.

Any motor homer, camper or sailor will tell you its easy.

What isn't easy is the knowledge of how to do it. This has been lost in the modern age, but as little as a generation ago we had it. It was called wartime.

Get a good book and have a read, it'll be more use than any tips on here.

Considering I live in an area of Sussex that has known flood areas & I managed to kill off my old Mondeo driving in water that I shouldn't have driven through, I'd say my chances are definitely below average! Lol!

Ahhhh yes I am prepared for a power cut, we were without electric for 10 days during storm Arwen so we do have candles, torches and a generator.

This country is not prepared to deal with potholes on the roads that have got even worse recently, if that was possible, never mind anything else. The answer you will find is that neither the goverment nor the majority of people are, myself included. Not really sure how one does to be honest. Am airtight bunker with 100 snicker bars?

You need to find a lactating goat and few chickens to take along with you. They will eat anything they can find as food for free and give you milk and meat and eggs. Just hope you arent vegan

I don't know about resources, but I think the response in early 2020 showed that people get their shit together when bad things happen, and help one another. The charity I was volunteering with suddenly had more offers of help than they knew what to do with

But look what happened in lockdown.

It was literally a day or two following some arsehole on social media talking about toilet paper and the shelves where cleared.

I remember going to Aldi to get some milk and everything was gone, people queuing up at the till with shopping trolleys stacked up with goods like it was the apocalypse.

Nope never prepared for poor weather. All the water going down drains we pay for in water tax. Water companies reeling it in. Next you see extra rain tax

The thing people really need to worry about is water. You can survive without almost anything else (even toilet paper!) for ages but if you don’t have access to clean water then you will die very quickly.

If I was buying stuff from scratch then I would put a proper water filter at the top of my list.

Yes, we all saw that - but all the charities in my local area were fucking inundated with offers for help.

Yes there are arseholes, but I don't actually think they were the majority.

(I bought two packs of the ultra large family pack bog roll in January 2020 - my usual habit, buy big, don't worry about it for six months - and was fucking relieved to have plenty until all that mess died down )

Not prepared beyond basics for a couple of days. Out government has placed us in a position of greater potential risk.

Should computer logistics fail nationaly, we would have no food within a few days. I have no clue how hard it would be for malicious actors to take out our logistics infrastructure.

I’m the same, I’m not wasting my time or energy on something that may or may not happen. I feel the same about everything in life.

I take precautions to try and prevent things going wrong but if I have no control about something that could happen, I ain’t going to think about until it actually does go pear shaped
