Negative is the opposite of positive, in between is neutral.

Realistic is in between pessimistic and optimistic.

It is true, but most people using realistic as neutral.

Like as an opposite of naive in the same time.

"Where is the line between the two in your opinion?"

I don't personally think there's alot of stuff that's unrealistic, it's about how much your willing to put in/sacrifice for whatever the outcome is you are after.

You could say becoming a millionaire is unrealistic, but with time, budgeting and wise investing it's attainable.

I think you can be a negative person and call yourself "realistic" but on reality that doesn't serve you as a person to have that mentality.

Being positive does serve you, and helps you push through where others give up.

That's the second serious response I've given to something today.

I agree, you must have a goal and need to do things to get what you want.

I meant being realistic (as not naive, not equal to negative) , because some things depend more on luck than what you willing to do to get it.

Funny I was thinking this to myself the other day. Not necessarily about wealth, but just about experiences in life.

I’ve been very naive up until recently. I’d always look for the best, hope for the best, choose to see the best in people. ALWAYS. And that sort of made me bullet proof in some ways, because even when bad things were happening, or when there was a risk, I didn’t even realise.

That naivety has led to a lucky life. There’s no way I could be like that now though.

I use wealth as a go to easy to explain response.

And I've been very much like yourself where I fight peoples corners behind their backs and try to be honest with them to their face hoping that they will understand my approach.

It's very easy to become jaded with people after a while, and you do have to try not to give everyone so much rope for your self preservation.

But you also need to understand that you don't know what people have been through to lead them on the path they are on now.

Having a child has changed me quite alot, I will try to help people and before it was to my own detriment, my child is my priority now, and I'm not letting others have a negative impact on her life.

Humans are complex fuckers arnt they.

Most people label both negative.

Negative can't see positive in anything anymore and lost hope.

Realistic sees positive and negative.

Trying put the goal somewhere between positive and naive.

“Most people” ? That’s not true at all. Those who believe life is negative usually have that outlook as a symptom of depression or grief.

Being realistic tips into negativity if you let negative reality influence your state of mind. Realistic people understand that reality is positive and negative and adjust their expectations accordingly.

I'm extremely realistic but people consistently tell me I'm wrong to be

What’s an example of that? I’ve frequently found that people who are telling me to “be realistic” are often limiting myself and others because they are unable to see or understand the possibilities ahead.

Life has positive and negative things.

Do the best you can to live it as positive as you can.

Shit happens sometimes and you need to deal with it.

Acknowledging it's crap, but you're looking for a solution is good.

Ignoring it and pretending to everyone it's all good will make more damage.

People's coping mechanism with depression/grief/problems is more important than what other people think.

Some people look the devil in the eye.

Some finding consolation in slight naivety.

Some can't deal with it and needs help.

Being realistic in my opinion only, is knowing what is possible and achievable. That doesn't mean limiting rather the opposite for me. Sometimes people who tell someone else to be realistic are making assumptions about what that person can achieve based on their own limitations.

An example to me would be if I want to go on an expensive holiday but don't have the money. Realistically I need to be aware that there are three options, put it all on credit and go tomorrow, save up and go later or don't go. The consequences of my decision will form my future reality.

It's a fact though that reality does limit one to an extent

People take it different from a woman often.

In real life someone has an almost smiley poker face.

Some looks like a villain from Columbia in the movies.

Usually jokes taken in different ways.

I do that silver lining thing as well, but with a hint of sarcasm and irony.

I was making jokes an hour after I got hit by a car.

" Well, it could have been a bus."

I was wearing waterproofs, so I looked like the Michelin man or the friendly ghost from Ghostbusters.

The driver thought he was hallucinating I guess. Not sure why he ignored my flashing lights.

They told me I had a dark spot on my face. I said it's the mud from laying on the road.

At some point I said: "Sorry, can't rub the rest off."

Reading

optimist/pessimist and realist/fantasist are not the same thing but they do have a relationship.

Think of a pair of x and y axes dividing the graph into four quarters. one axis is optimist to pessimist and the other is realist to fantasist. The top right hand quarter would represent those who are both optimistic and realistic and so on.

optimistic realist (most of us obv.)

optimistic (deluded ) fantasist

pessimistic realist (poor bugger)

pessimistic fantasist (prone to excessive forum time ;-? )

Each of us has a home somewhere in this matrix with some sort of hell right in the middle where the lines cross directly over the terminally boring....

Realistic is to suggest cynical or ambivalent if I’m taking your context correctly. However, IMO it’s more important to look for the motivation behind the behaviour rather than the behaviour itself.

I don’t anticipate that I’m going to fall head over heels in love at first sight, nor do I believe such a thing is possible or healthy but that isn’t a bad thing. I’d say believing in fairytales is probably a lot more harmful. We’re socially conditioned in such a way that you must believe in this or not because it would be nice if they were true; that’s the nature of belief though I suppose. So while I do look at things realistically, I don’t do so in a maudlin or jaded way.

I consider myself quite realistic in my expectations romantically/sexually but it doesn’t come from a place of negativity, it’s acceptance or indifference. Neither are negative nor are they neutral.
