How cautious/paranoid are you about scammers?

What lengths do you go to ?

Do you protect yourself or assume that security filters and software will do it for you?

And how paranoid or cautious are you when it comes to online transactions?

I’ve only recently started purchasing online and I do it from an account that has a small balance so if I get scammed hopefully it is limited to the purchase and a small amount, not a big account.

Just before Christmas I got someone in my local bank branch to set up online banking for me on a phone app. I have been very wary of this but it is getting difficult without it as some of the businesses I do business with are becoming more reluctant to take cheques.

Security filters and software can only do so much.

I'm wary of any communication from people I don't know and from banks etc that I do know. I have also finally got my dad to understand that literally nobody calling or emailing is to be trusted if there's money involved and to always check with me.

My Facebook account is as private as possible but the one occasion that I posted a photo of myself on a review of a tourist attraction resulted in an American army major and an American surgeon, both incredibly good looking, in their forties and obviously quite wealthy judging by their photos asking to be my friend because I'm very pretty. Fortunately my head is self wobbling but if I was lonely who knows what my reaction would have been.

Healthily paranoid. But I work in IT so I see the scams popping up all the time and often have to try to undo the damage. Sad thing is I've had repeat customers, no matter how much I warn them

Yeah me too. The problem is it's hard to avoid in the digital age. As long as I'm aware of how / when / where I've given my data / spent online, then it's easy to spot the dodgy emails / links.

Otherwise, your data is pretty much floating around online and you pray that the company's holding it have strong enough cyber security protection. scary really.

I've only ever been scammed once when buying something online but I learned from that and haven't been caught out since.

I don't accept cold calling either in person or over the phone.

I don't buy things on a whim and never through social media ads.

My mum was taken in by the same scam twice. Unfortunately the second time they targeted her she'd forgotten about the first time. The people who carry out the scams are the lowest if the low, utter bastards.

I spoke to the guy the first time because he called her back. I gave him a very firm talking to and he told me my parents would be ashamed of me . The sad thing is my mum was worried in case he was genuinely from Microsoft and I'd been extremely rude to him.

The other worrying thing is that when I reported it to the police they told me the company was genuine and they couldn't do anything. Hopefully things have moved on a bit

Oh that is utterly ridiculous. Although I suppose the scammers could have been spoofing a legitimate company

I'm not as cautious as I should be, but I'm pretty distrusting. I never speak to people on calls unless, I am expecting them. And I definitely won't give details out.

I'm pretty distrusting as a rule and if a deal seems to go to be true then it is.

Although not scammed . All my personnel details have be hacked thru my former company and a company they use to make payments for pensions and wages.

Both times sent letter informing me of what had happened. Plus paying for credit checks to be fully monitored. The details hacked was virtually everything about me. Name , address , telephone numbers, bank details etc.

Their advice was to change details about me. When I asked are they saying to change name , address NI number as listed . The advisor did not know answer.

Yes now do not accept any calls if number not known. Landline is on answer phone. Do not answer any calls on that. Companies told to take off list. Plus other things. Get lots of calls. When checking see scam number.

Yes this causes sometimes problem with friends if they change their number or a company trying to contact me. I tell friends now and companies etc. If no answer leave a message. So far no one has scammed me. Perhaps a bit paranoid ? But from seeing amount of scammers reported on television and news feeds. Plus get on Fab sometimes .

I think I’m cautious because my passwords tend to be looooooooong.

That said, my EBay account was once hacked and used by scammers to sell stuff. That gave me stress.

EBay sorted it all quite quickly though.

In my line of work we have vulnerable folk who get scammed by folk calling to their home and repeat targeting them. There are some abhorrent folk in this world.

I stick with reputable sites, the only shopping I do online s from amazon or my local supermarket. Any rogue emails simply get reported as spam and deleted

I'm very cautious about things,

I use trusted sites to buy from, never from places like FB.

I delete any suspicious looking emails or texts and go on the idea that if something or someone seems too good to be true, they/it usually is.

Scammers pray on vulnerable people, if you ever saw the bbc1 prog with Rav wilding, you'll know how they target people. It's horrible, romance fraudsters look for lonely people and capitalise on that too.
