"No problem talking about race. In what context though OP were you thinking?" Various contexts. I guess the answer might be ‘it depends’ right? idk. But like I notice people get uncomfortable when I make jokes about being Black sometimes (in person) which is part of the humour don’t get me wrong but it’s interesting

As a white man who has privilege I can't comment on people of colours experience of prejudice for example. But I take people as I find them irrespective of creed, colour or race. It really isn't an issue for me.

"Yes but thats my own problem and fault as I am uneducated in what's correct in terms of terminology I've lived in Wales for ten and a half years, I have not met a black person, before I moved I worked alongside all nationalities and races and just treated every person respectfully X" I went to uni and some of my experiences with racism were people that probably didn’t realise how they were making me feel, clearly fascinated at the fact that I was the first or one of the first black people they’d met

"Not uncomfortable. But I find it hard to join in on some of your race jokes at times" On the forums I can get that. And I think it’s dependent on your relationship to the person right? In person, I’d 100% expect you to laugh at my jokes or I’ll pull the race card out [there’s no race card]

"Not uncomfortable as such. I do my best to empathise. I appreciate the privileges I was born with as well as the more detrimental parts. It's more than I don't have anything to contribute to race threads. Aside from a couple of months here and there I've always lived in areas very lacking in ethnic diversity, so not only have I not lived it myself, I've barely seen it in real life " See I appreciate you’re trying to be kind and caring. But truthfully you don’t need to do any of that. Just be yourself. You don’t need to focus on differences. Just focus on similarities. See people as people. I find it offensive (not you, just in general) when people of other ethnicities think that they are more “privileged” than me, just because of my skin. I know my family find it annoying too. We’re all just people and we all experience life in different ways. You shouldn’t think anything about you is “detrimental”, just work on being kind, which I’m sure you already are

This is how I feel. I recognise I’m in a minority race but I’ve not lived the experiences of Black British people so I feel uncomfortable contributing to conversations of experiences of a Black British people. For example, I saw posts mentioning people refusing to sit next to a Black person on a train and thus having the privilege of not having a seat partner on an otherwise full train as Black privilege. (I actually looked this up as I thought it was hyperbole. Learned it wasn’t.) Or being followed around a shop. I’ve never had any of those experiences myself but to most people I would appear to be Black or mixed race.

People would be like ‘stay woke’ etc. now woke has been taken by a bunch of people and turned into a negative word for a politically correct agenda to try and curtail free speech, stop people having rights and to make people feel guilty about their privilege There was a bit in-between where it was appropriated by our fair skinned "allies" to start stupid campaigns like banning "master bedroom" and Rastamouse. That made it easy for the Daily Mail and Fox News to basically take the piss out of those types of champagne socialists. Wait what? Rastamouse is banned? " Probably. Hopefully because it was shit. "See I appreciate you’re trying to be kind and caring. You shouldn’t think anything about you is “detrimental”, just work on being kind, which I’m sure you already are " I'm not sure I ever implied that people weren't people. My life has been easier for being born the predominant race for the area in which I live. It's been easier because I was born with good genes in terms of aesthetics. My aptitude for maths and data have made it easier in my line of work. I don't think that appreciating the things that have made my life easier is calling anyone lesser. But they are simple privileges I was born with. I didn't earn them, I never worked for them, and I appreciate the people who have had to work harder than I have to reach the same place. Detrimental may not be the right word. I'm in the post coital haze while I wait to hear he's home safe and that seemed the closest appropriate word in my foggy brain. But not everything I was born with has made my life easier. And I'm not looking for sympathy or anything like that in saying so. Just saying that we're all different

"I wouldn't say I find it uncomfortable, but I do struggle to see what I can contribute to a conversation about race. I was very lucky growing up to have not experienced racism in any form and while sympathising with those that have and acknowledging the inequalities that exist outside of my little bubble, I genuinely don't know how I can do more than that. " In the mid eighties, long before tattoos were fashionable,I would be followed round shops by security or staff, always pulled over at the airport on departure and arrival back in the UK.Refused to be served in pubs,or asked to roll down my sleeves in restaurants.

"I haven’t done a race thread since my return and I’m genuinely curious. I’ll regret this I’m sure but yolo. I talk and joke about race a lot. It’s a but part of my identity and my experience. Much like being a woman might be or being queer might be to some on here (I know you can be all of these things too). But yes people don’t sit next to you and yes security follows you around a lot from when you’re like 12/13. But there’s layers to that. When I go to the shops dressed smart for work and I go in my tracksuit I have a different experience. There’s a gendered layer to the experiences as well. And I think yeah there’s stuff that is coded that means there’s things you may not understand. For example calling someone ‘coloured’ in America or Britain may cause outrage but some [famous] Black passing people from South Africa have identified as that recently and it highlights that difference. We know people of colour aren’t a monolith. Black is not used to describe Black AND Asian in this country anymore because of the uniqueness of our experiences. But the same is true in many ways for many people that are Black here but perhaps aren’t Black British, as you say. It’s late so I’m waffling but yeah

I just finished reading White Fragility yesterday and highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in understanding racism from the white perpective and becoming less racist and a better ally. The main take home for me was this - racism is built into society, we are all taught it, we are also taught that a racist is a horrible person, but everyone carries out racist acts in their lives. We are then unable to get past our own defenses when called on our racism because we cannot bare to be a "horrible person". The duality cannot exist (you can't be a good person with good intentions and do something racist), and so the feedback loop is to uphold racism and deny it exists in ourselves. Despite that most people really are trying to be good people and have good intentions. Humans are weird fragile egos.

Despite that most people really are trying to be good people and have good intentions. Humans are weird fragile egos." ^^ All of this! It’s why people are so offended by the term racist and absolutely refuse to engage with displaying any kind of empathy for the offended or impacted person. I’ve had it on here. I’ve had it all my life. ‘How dare you call me a racist’ - I didn’t I just said that what you did/ said is racist/ has racist connotations etc. And the history bit. All of that. Historical context is important. It’s why I might be offended if you call me aggressive when I calmly express my valid feelings about my experience or when schools say that Afros aren’t neat/ professional hairstyles. We live in a world where understanding of racism is so shallow. Everyone thinks unless you say something explicitly referencing someone’s race negatively then it’s not racism and you’re just a snowflake. And in that sense it feels like- are we actually moving forward? Was progress actually just silent acceptance? Power and historical context and context in general is important with racism. As it is with all inequalities. It’s how we understand the present day. People talk about slxvery and colonialism being so long ago that it’s not relevant. You can’t make sense of my experience without understanding those periods. Etc etc

Literally it was just that they were cooking jerk chicken in Brockwell Park and I followed the scent like a proper Jamaican would." I feel this. In South London, I’m asked if I’m Brazilian nonstop. When I say no, that’s followed by Portuguese? No. Angolan? No! I don’t even bother telling people where I’m from. People from where I’m from are such a minority here with less than 100 of us in the entire UK, that it’s often a waste to tell people where I’m from. The people from the island nearest to mine seem to have the hardest time accepting I am from where I am here. Ffs, the island isn’t homogenous there’s people ghostly white, redheads with freckles, people so dark their skin looks almost blue, and every shade in between. Being told, oh but you look like you’re from our country is infuriating. I’ve taken to saying not so nice things to some people who were insistent on trying to tell me where I’m from by telling them when I come out of their cunt they can have the privilege of telling me where I’m from but until then I’ll do doing the honours of telling them Not so nice I know but ffs it’s so annoying to be so obsessed with the idea of someone needing to look a certain way to be from a certain place. So, all this to say whilst I cannot share your experiences in full I can empathise with you in a somewhat similar but also different way. Stay woke, the old way.

Stuff like this is interesting. And people talking about other forms of slxvery undermine the racist genocidal nature of the transatlantic trade and the slxvery in the US. They are the only examples in human history of race based slxvery and it was based on racist myths, justified by the science of the enlightenment, that meant that Black people were not seen as equal beings. It has not been seen since or before like this. It’s comparable to nothing. The justification for it were *new* racial hierarchies. Not existing ones. Tribal or classist or other reasons that people have been traded through history are not comparable in any way for anyone that’s read any academic reading in the subject area.

Not complain about not getting a job because of skin colour.. Black and white people are racist... Lmao you sure Look at some of the group titles on 'kik', white genocide, white people are scum etc If you’re judging the world by KIK, sadly I don’t reckon your opinion is well formed. " I am not judging the world by Kik,I am giving an example. If you can't see that or know/accept these groups exist,I suggest it is you who is not well informed.Clearly you have not read my prior posts in this thread.

Perhaps self reflection would also be beneficial here. 2. The white people who have had enough of this shit rammed down there throats and proud to be white are called racist.. See if you took the time to educate yourself, as people should, you’d discover this has a term — white fragility — makes you feel it’s being rammed down your throat. 3. …look back at history. Again have you done so? You’re of course free to your own opinion but this is oozing loads of let me point the finger at everyone else but when I do I fail to remember that three fingers are pointing back at me at the same time. There's nothing wrong with calling Nigerians, Nigerians, for the most part. The 2 was the hilarious bit.

Those sl@ves could be Freed and achieve full roman citizenship. Skin colour was totally irrelevant. It was just about territory and then status. Those who opposed the Romans would certainly be killed or ensl@ved but you could be a sl@ve and work and live as a doctor in your own dwelling with your family. It was totally different. I recommend Mary Beard documentaries. She makes it all easy to digest. Her documentary on Caligula is particularly good.

I had to come back to this lmao. First of all what you’re saying say the start is funny because the Roman trade is accepted widely by academics to not be similar to racial slxvery yet you and others seem to bring it up. I’ve not said anything that is simply my opinion I’m telling you what academics have written on it and what is widely accepted. Second- i know plenty of people that know about those things and in fact I went to school with plenty of Congolese people and know from them and also from reading when I was studying and occasionally since that Leopold is regarded as one of the most brutal and evil men in history. In fact Prof Kehinde Andrews writes about him in his book The New age of empire (which I recommend btw). The British were bad guys. Most of Europe were bad guys. That’s pretty well known. You might feel like we talk about Britain a lot but people in this country engage mostly with western/ English speaking conversations on it. Or they have conversations in this country where contextually it’s natural Britain would be brought up. We’re getting away from the OP here but it is always interesting to me that conversations about race and racism always go back to undermining (intentionally or unintentionally) how horrific slxvery was. The sociologist in me says it’s because of social dominance. But I want to believe it’s just because people haven’t really been taught about it properly.

Not to detract from the fact that 17000 sailors died, but I think suggesting the UK has an overwhelmingly "good" story to tell on the issue feels a bit disingenuous, or at least incomplete. It is disingenuous and incomplete to claim we haven't a good reputation. We were the first country to ban the sl@ve trade and enforce it.We paid a huge price not just in lives and Military budget, but we were economically shunned and financially punished for a long time by countries that supported sl@very.The points I am making are to an earlier post asking in typical sarcastic/snarky/Guardian fashion what should we be looking for back in history. "But judge, I only beat my wife for the first three quarters of our marriage. Surely you should praise me for stopping?" " No comparison.Cheap and belittling to the subject.Sad.

"This thread is bullshit.. Most White people are scared to say anything even the colour black.. The white people who have had enough of this shit rammed down there throats and proud to be white are called racist.. People should educate themselves and look back in history as life is hard.. and you have to educate/learn/train hard to make yourself a better person and get a better job to earn more money.. Not complain about not getting a job because of skin colour.. Black and white people are racist... How far back in history should we be looking? What should we be looking for, back in history? Huthis and Tutsis murdering each other. The two Nigerians I went to college with who killed each others tribal members with machetes then skinned them and left them hanging from trees as a warning. The many black tribes who captured and sold each other into sl@very.General Gordon's army that went into Khartoum to stop the overland sl@ve trade after the Royal Navy West Africa Squadron made the sea bound sl@ve trade impossible,Seven decades fighting sl@very,over seventeen thousand dead sailors, one dead sailor for every nine freed sl@ves,twenty five per cent minimum of the Navys budget per annum fighting sl@very.In todays term the WAS budget is more than we spend on the entire Army Navy Air Force. The Egyptians,Babylonians and the Romans had an 'inferiority and racist myth' based attitude to sl@very.We never hear of the French and Portuguese in India, the Belgians in the Congo,Germans in East Africa,Spanish in South America,it's always the evil British .... Tbf, you’re right I didn’t hear about the French, Portuguese, Belgians, Germans and Spanish but I did read Pickle’s bit about the US’ role in sl*very. You’ve actually quoted him too so seems you may not have heard it but definitely saw it if you failed to read it. I know it’s but a minor detail and perhaps all about the semantics but pointing it out to make sure we can keep things accurate is all. Not sure if this is sarcasm... obviously we know that much of Africa and the Caribbean speak French. We know the Dutch were in South Africa and Caribbean. Loads of small islands owned by them. So we do have this in our collective knowledge, right? Like the average person knows Transatlantic Sl@very is a European thing- us Brits were just remarkably efficient at it considering our size and stuff. Trans Atlantic sl@very was not exclusively a 'European thing',unless the South,East,West and North African sl@ve traders self identified as European. Most of the far east, especially China, traded in sl@ves,perhaps they identified as European." If you mean the Africans who had enough power to sell those with less social status to colonisers in an often future attempt to escape oppression themselves, sure. Yeah that happened.

"... I have been sometimes yes. It would be bs to say otherwise. ^^ All of this! Etc etc " Progress is stalled until we get used to being uncomfortable in order to be accountable, and cancel cancel culture. This thread has taken the expected turn for the worse. Is this what to meant by "I know I'll regret this" OP?

That's why equality laws severely fucked them over. They were already having to compete for scarce resources and equality laws around employment and the like just meant that poor white people had it even worse. Meanwhile, in America especially, champagne socialists mocked them for being worried about it. These equality laws weren't met with the increased funding necessary to meet the needs of a minority/immigrant population. Same shit happens today. Middle classed guardian readers mock poor white people for being racist while voting against policies that would benefit those same poor people's financial plight and make them a bit less terrified and defensive.

"Race? Not particularly no. But the word queer makes me very uncomfortable. That’s for a different thread and it’s not for me to start that. You used the word queer in your OP and compared it as an identifier with race and being a woman. Anybody can identify as any gender or sexuality nowadays. But you can't identify out of being black. So it's a silly comparison. " I said being Black is a big part of my identity much like being a woman or being queer might be to some on here. They’re both possibly parts of one’s identity and for many, huge parts of their identity and their experience. The fixed nature of skin colour does not mean that it’s not fair to say that. Not a silly comparison. This thread wasn’t about whether you’re uncomfortable using the word queer. Not even a little bit. That’s why I said that a discussion about your discomfort with the word queer is for another thread and my implication was that it should be done by a queer person, not by me, a straight cis man

"No. I normally find it really thought provoking as, perhaps surprisingly, it's not something I've given all that much thought to (relatively). How hard would you think if I asked you where you’re from right now? " I’m not quite sure of the point I want to add here, but the other day a friend (my power of attorney) was managing a phone call for me where they asked my colour and ethnicity I think I was. She answered for me White British and I usually don’t answer in that way, I think of myself as white mixed European or white other as I have a mixed heritage cultural background and I think it’s important that things like that are captured - maternal grandfather Irish born, father Hungarian born, me Croydon born. What is race anyway? Is it a colour or a nationality? The glib “human race” is a catch all but we are all human altho I question it occasionally. I am uncomfortable with jokes about colour and ethnicity, not because I don’t want to have those conversations but because many people are ignorant and cause incendiary situations when oblivious to the fuel or others can tactically arouse pointed discussion back and claim a level of self defence that is not deserved. I have no answers to historic reparations needed but I’m happy to discuss and learn and educate and support for now and the future.

"It's a bad day still we have to discuss this. I couldn't care less if my neighbour is brown black yellow or white as long as there good neighbours. Stop listening to the pish on these chat shows and edl thugs. Don't get me started love before bombs xx" Personally I find it odd when people bring up mythical yellow, blue, green and purple people in these types of discussion

"Yeah I can be uncomfortable, but that's due to the lack of my understanding on race topics. I'm quite blunt, so the potential to offend someone is real " Is that the intent though?

"[there’s no race card] " There was going to be a race card, but they couldn't decide what colour it should be. A lot of people with white skin are uncomfortable talking about race because the biggest white privilege is not having to worry about race, so they're not not very expert, and they're worried about accidentally giving offence. Interesting fact. People of East African descent are closer genetically to white skinned Europeans than they are to West Africans. Skin colour just isn't a very important gene.

"I'm not uncomfortable talking about race at all but I've no time for anyone who is comfortable dismissing my own personal experiences as irrelevant. I'm a white man living in a country where people have been defined by their religious upbringing for generations. I have family members who have been victims of the "no blacks, no Irish, no dogs" mentality and I laugh at people whinging about having to have their photo on a driving licence. I've always been searched in airports, had my picture taken before being allowed on a plane, not been welcome in certain parts of the country and had a gun put to my head many times simply because I'm an Irish Catholic. I've never been discriminated against because of my skin colour but I'm struggling to see how I could be dismissed as a privileged white man based on my experience. I've found on fab especially that people are uncomfortable talking about those experiences. I've been told that on the 2 occasions that I've had a gun to my head and the entire contents of my vehicle taken by men wearing the uniform of the crown that I was obviously doing something illegal rather than just going about my daily business. I'm not uncomfortable discussing anything as long as those I'm discussing it with aren't beating me over the head with it and are genuinely open to discussing my take on discrimination. " Because once you step out of your bubble into London or wherever else, you're just a white dude. Nobody knows you're Irish or Catholic until you open your mouth. And then yeah, if you do open your mouth and someone's stole a bottle of booze or put a bomb in a bin, they might assume it was you. Why? Because your Irish and Catholic. That's how racism works. There's a great book called how the Irish became white. You should give it a read.

But I feel conscious sometimes that people are often uncomfortable with these topics even in jest. Are you? " I don't mind talking about it with reasonable people who are open to talking honestly. But I'm not going to talk about it on here anymore as it always turns into a competition with white people jumping through hoops to prove how not racist they are and black folks trying to prove how black they are. This just creates more divisions as it seems to create animosity. My personal opinion on race is regardless of the colour of a person I don't judge them by their colour but but the quality of their actions and the words that come out of their mouths. So basically if someone is a dick I'm gonna avoid them regardless of colour. Scumbags are scumbags, decent people are decent colour does not come into this equation. But I will not get into anymore discussions on here as I'm sick of having to justify my views and jump through imaginary hoops to prove I am not a racist. I know I'm not that's all that matters if you don't believe me that's your problem not mine. End

Where I grew up I had friends of many different colours, for this I got beaten and almost killed hospitalised broken are cracked skull, broken ribs, concussion, broken fingers and internal bleeding. Why because I was white with non white friends attacked by National Front thug's. I was 14 for fuck sake! Now end

Up until the point where you answer a particular question, someone doesn’t know if they’re totally ok with you or vehemently opposed with you. That judgment and preconceptions towards women, people of colour, people with visable disabilities happens instantly and with bias

It also used to happen on dating sites where a guy would assume I'm white (because he is attracted to me and believes he's only into white women). Somewhere in our chat, I'd reveal otherwise and he would either say then that he isn't into Black women or he would just ghost. So basically, you're cool until they know what you are. Then you're not cool.

I saw the author do a great Twitter thread talking about how the Irish would, rather than working with and in solidarity with Black people in America, take jobs for less money and then also refuse to work those jobs if Black People were hired. Super interesting. I will say that having worked in a Catholic school with plenty of Irish people that grew up in the troubles and done some reading at uni that I understand some things about their experiences. But I think the complexity of things like race and racism is that even with those with white skin that are racialised as non white experiences relative privilege in many spaces where they are able to mask the group they belong to. Having Black or Brown skin in that sense is more difficult (or impossible) to hide

I look like the stereotypical English rose, but I am not English. I am also not entirely British. But no-one knows that unless I explain my family history (which includes a fuck ton of genocide in recent history etc). I know that makes me privileged because I am treated as a white person. I shall ignore the bit about being female and disabled because those bits render me marginally less privileged *puts disability card away*

This is the social construction of race right? Which is interesting. There’s no biological difference between races of any significance so say biologists and academics. The differences between races are cultural and made in society. Our experiences as people, particularly in western societies are what make race relevant. Stuart Hall wrote about never hearing the term Black in Jamaica before he came to England.
