If someone asked me to make them pie and mash I'd probably make a chicken or beef pie and serve it with mashed potato. Does it mean something different in the north of England ?

Probably a ‘light pasty with fillet de boeuf, accompanied by deconstructed buttered pomme de terre with a hint of jus’

also, probably ‘£85’

couple, us we him her.

It's a London dish.

Find a pub that does a good pie and mash and it's amazing served with a pint of London Pride.

Or find a proper pie and mash shop with the green liquor sauce nom nom nom.

It's a dish that originated in the docks of London.

Don't knock it until you have tried a good pie and mash.

Was treated to the Pie/Mash with liquor experience on a break after exhibiting at Excel in London. Was a while ago but remember although tasty, nothing needed much chewing and was eaten with fork and spoon !!

It was East and South London "poor mans food" when I was a kid.

Rather plain and bland.

When I was a child, I did not really like it. But now, as an adult, I enjoy it in a kinda nostalgic way, Though it is no longer poor mans food. Its fucking expensive now and there are very few _ie n mash shops left in my way.

It will no doubt be dressed up as something posh in a hipster restaurant and they will charge you £50 for the privilege

Tony’s _ie n mash shop in Waltham abbey is voted one of the best. Always had loads of footballers in there when I lived there. Beckham was always in there. Personally I’m not a fan of that green stuff.

Best one I had was Maureen's by Chrisp Street Market.

My mum took me there as a child as she used to live there.

Not any more. There's only one left opposite Primark now.

The green stuff isn't made from eel liquor any more. It's just parsley sauce.

Being originally from Yorkshire and still a frequent visitor there and further north, I agree northern pies and gravy are just better. I think mash can be made anywhere and depends more on the maker than the region, but pies - yes, no doubt in my mind where I eat pies and it's not round home.

Down South, _ie n mash is the food of Gods, especially if eaten in Crisp St Market, Poplar. Both Eastenders (shit name, superb food) and Maureen’s are excellent. It is still cheap as well.

Up north, it’s something eaten by lard-arses.

Every town down south has a workman's cafe hidden away somewhere.... even in the posh parts of Hampshire and Surrey you can always find a good, cheap pie mash and gravy. Even when I was working in and around London there was always a 'greasy spoon' hidden in an alley somewhere nearby.

Mince meat pie only in hot water crust pastry, slightly burnt on top and served upside down....no other choice! lumpy mash that's been scraped onto the plate, liquor traditionally made using the water from the stewed eels but more recently it's just watery parsley sauce, lashings of vinegar and a side of stewed eels is proper pie and mash and I want it now!!

And there is the definitive answer about the difference between _ie n mash as served in London v “a pie” with mash as eaten everywhere else.
