Morning fabbers & happy new year.

So with a new job role I have been offered there’s travelling involved… now I haven’t done this kind of travel with work before… hotels for a couple of nights and back … any of you do that for work? How do you find it?

Sorry it’s not a sexual thread… just trying to get others experience of it

I’ve done it and work with people who do it regularly.

Get a good flight case which will take your tech and clothes in a small luggage. Saves a lot of hassle. Travel light as you can.

Tech inc noise cancelling headphones are a sanity saver. Hotels usually have free WiFi so use that.

Avoid hotel restaurants they’re overpriced and usually not great. Get out and find something in the local area if you can.

I did it in my last job and I didn’t like it purely because I have a family and my daughter is young. Missed being at home with them. My daughter struggled with me being away a lot.

Also the travel was a bit exhausting when it was further out. Spent my evenings crashing out, not always eating well etc. it’s lonely.

Hotels are better if you want more privacy.

Airbnb are better if prefer to cook for yourself, chat to others, etc.

I think Glowupdoll covered the essentials well.

Decent hotels if you can - staying somewhere nice will make you a happier, better worker.

Eat out - use your trips to explore the places you visit and find better food than you would in the hotels.

Don’t be afraid to stay an extra night before or after your work days if it means you get to travel during more sensible hours.

And sometimes it *is* worth checking Fab for local meets. But don’t stay up all night fucking and then expect to do your best work the next day.

I do and have done it a lot.

One thing I will say is, you'll soon get fed up with hotel food, after a few days on the road. Not to mention, it can get pretty lonely.

Having said that, I've been to places, and met folk, I'd never have imagined I'd visit or meet in previous jobs.

One other tip.

Buy a phone charger for your travel case. Sooner or later you WILL leave your charger in a hotel, don’t let it be your only one.

Mr N did it for years.

Get the best hotels you're allowed within your budget and carry earplugs.

Don't drive tired.

Three course meals are lovely but combined with a lot of driving will eventually catch up with your waistline

And a small travel iron if yiu don't like creases on your shirt like me just in case there is none at the hotel, though most do have them.

You don't say where you are traveling to ... UK, Europe, USA, Asia etc?

I travel a lot and I have different regimes for each e.g where we have offices, and I go there multiple times in a year, I leave a bag in one of the lockers with clothes, toiletries etc so I don't need to carry them all the time. Sometimes I need to travel to these offices unexpectedly whilst I am traveling so its good to have spare clothes already there.

For new destinations I always make sure I take additional time so I can explore ... I spent so many years traveling the world and only ever seen airports, hotels and offices ... not now

And register for loyalty cards with the airlines, hotels etc and if you can use credit cards where you get cash back or points and hopefully you will gather enough for a free holiday as a reward for putting up with the work travel

All of the above is great advice.

My working away from home essentials are:

Aeropress Go

Kindle

Noise cancelling headphones

Silicone ear plugs

I'd echo what others say about finding restaurants that aren't in the hotel if you can, after a few weeks you'll find yourself craving fresh crunchy veg otherwise.

Also I don't recommend a full English every morning, continental breakfasts are much better on not only your waistline but also your cognitive function.

In addition to the above invest in a comfortable sleep mask and keep a bag packed with the staples such as toiletries, socks and underwear. Cuts down on the packing time for each trip and you know you always have what you need at short notice.

Some hotels,especially the independents have cracking restaurants because they cater for the locals too.'The Old Fourpenny Shop'and 'The Warwick Arms'Hotel,both Warwick.

I used to travel for work and loved it. My tips would be:

• Book the nicest hotel within your budget and within the easiest location of places to explore / city centre if possible (even better if you can get one with a decent gym/ pool on site).

• Keep a separate wash bag of toiletries in your case so you’re not constantly having to pack / unpack items from home.

• Pack a spare phone charger, headphones, power bank, ear plugs, sleep mask.

• Comfy clothes for travelling in and a capsule wardrobe for work wear, so you can just grab it and go.

• Slippers and pj’s (if you wear them) so you feel more at home in your hotel room.

• Snacks for your hotel room and I also always take a mini bottle of concentrated fruit squash to add to water as I get sick of tea, coffee and fizzy pop.

• Limit yourself with the amount of junk food and full English breakfasts or you’ll end up feeling sluggish

This is so important. A few years ago had to travel to Rwanda, Zambia, South Africa, Brasil, Peru, Columbia. I would always fly in before the weekend and out after the weekend and spend sat/sun exploring.

I’d always pay a local too it’s fine when you’re backpacking for a month or two but when you have a day or two you want to make sure you have crazy experiences and don’t waste time getting too lost or in trouble so $50 for a local for a day or two is a good investment. Even if ubering I’ll often take a passenger they can help you out tricky situations, barter for a pre-agreed commission, and give you local knowledge
