… or anyone wanting casual sex for that matter - do before dating / hookup apps were ubiquitous?

In America in the aughts… we had Craig Newmark.

And the “casual encounters” section

You had to use contact ads in magazines - or just go to lots of parties and put yourself out a bit. With my first wife, it was mainly the latter and that's how we found our best contacts.

Craigslist’s was still kind of a thing but not really active

There’s always been the app before apps, just website versions. So okcupid for example

Otherwise it was just the good old fashioned get smashed at the pub and take someone you’ll regret later home

There were contact magazines. People would put advertisements with a photo. You could send a letter with some photo's to the magazine and they would forward it to the person. It would take over a week to make contact. Common terms were "VWE" and "Long stayer and quick repeater"

Contact magazines and small ads in the back of some 'normal' publications. I worked for such a publication in the late 80s. We provided po box numbers, the replies came in to the office and the people who placed the ad picked them up.

The people who placed ads in the publication I worked for were very much the 'next door neighbour ' type. I remember being particularly struck by two people. One woman who came to collect the responses to her and her husband's carefully worded swingers party advert who was the epitomy of respectable and a similar man who brought in his reply to an advert which included Polaroids of him in lacy knickers and a feather boa (the envelope was unsealed and the photos fell out). I was quite young and that made me realise that you can't judge a book by it's cover.

I met very few back then. Some also wanted gifts as well.

There were contact magazines but to be perfectly frank, rather than putting time into a website, I used to put more time in speaking to women. That worked just as well, arguably better. Here it takes an age before you might even have a social. Real life, you can be dumped within minutes or get luckier. Often the internet isn't that helpful

Local newspaper, when it used box numbers. all changed when they went over to rip off premium rate phone numbers.

Loot was good because I realised that they had an overflow column on the back page and if you began with a word near the end of the alphabet it would bee on there and people who were just browsing in Smith's would see it easily. I started with 'Youthful' (in my forties!)

Premium rate numbers killed all of that but luckily my little black book was fairly full for years after then.

Forum was the one we used as we bought it monthly for the ads and the readers' letters which was one of our inspirations for trying threesomes - I can still remember some of the stories quite well after all these years so they must have made an impact.

I was in a LTR from 18 until 27 so did a fair bit of casual sex when we split, just as the internet became a thing. Lucky me!

Magazines, clubs, free ads and trusted circles.

My wife and I are swingers and have profiles on here. We are however, far more active in the club scene and have 99% of our experiences in clubs to be fair.

Back in the it was what they called 'contact magazines' You read an advert, then replied by mail to a PO Box number then eagerly awaited a reply - which usually never came. I think 'Forum' was one of those magazines ...

Years ago, as a swinger, I remember a monthly printed publication by subscription only to find out about events. The events were very underground. You’d have to express your interest in attending by post. IIRC, you’d post a full body (vanilla) photo as well if you weren’t already a member. You’d receive back a postcard with event details and a password.

From that, it evolved to BB style online. From bulletin boards online it evolved to a section of Yahoo! Maybe it was Yahoo Chats. I can’t remember. For me, after Yahoo I’d find Fet and find a niche of swingers there but it’s not specifically for swingers, IYKYK.

I used the good old Craig section when I was first interested in casual sex.

A lot of people who messaged me were surprised that I literally only wanted sex - kept offering various amounts and it soon became a turn off. Luckily a friend suggested here. They really helped my vagina. That's what real friends do isn't it?
