Historically its a crock of shite but I can respect the film making aspect.

I wonder what a modern day remake would look like…

Aww, one of my dads favourite films . I've seen it maybe 5 times in childhood. Often on around Christmas, to the point my brother and myself will say to each other?... 'have you had a phone call to say Zulu is on'?

Roll my eyes now, but it'll be something that's memorable when he's gone

the general aspect of the film is mostly correct. There are a good few inaccuracies though.some being

1)the rifles the zulus used at rourkes drift were not the ones taken from islandwhana.they were old rifles taken elsewhere and the zulus couldn't use them properly.

2)the zulu warriors that attacked rourkes drift were a reserve force.

3)the characterisation of Hook in the film was nothing like the real Hook who in fact turned out to be a real hero and saved the hospital

... And, did anyone know Michael Caine actually auditioned for the part of Hook only to be told he wasn't suitable.

However Stanley Baker knew him and said would he like to play Bromhead instead

I think I'm well into over 50 times watching this movie. It is a, timeless piece of movie making. A remake today, would ruin it

And for those of us with a touch of ocd, when you realise they didn't have enough martini-Henry rifles and they sneaked a few Enfield. 303's in, you can't stop spotting them

And I remember one of the Zulu warrior Chiefs was played by a decendant of the character he plays in the battle. Later he became a senior member of Nelson Mandela's government.

I absolutely love this film … even though, as many have said, there are significant historical inaccuracies in it… a bloody jingoistic story though.

I have it on DVD… but still recorded it yesterday and look forward to curling up with it very soon.

For info … John Chards pistol from Rorkes Drift is in the Royal Engineers museum in Chatham. I once had the opportunity to handle it.

couple, us we him her.

I am going to watch it after I get out of the bath.

There's been many a historical drama that's not entirely accurate but they generally state this.

Very few films are 100% accurate things get changed for dramatic affect.

I mean brave heart FFS.

Secret hideaway in the pennines

Little known fact, at one point, the director had to issue rubber spears to the Zulu warriors as the got a little over eager with the wooden props

Chief Butelezi

Also … it is a fact that less than 1/3 of the contingent were actually Welsh. The 24th Regiment of foot was actually the Warwick’s Regt … it wasn’t designated a a Welsh Regt until 2 years later… and (sadly) they never sang Men of Harlech!

11 VCs were awarded … unprecedented, but this was to deflect national attention away from Chelmsfords disaster at Islandwana the day before!!

The real hero of Rorkes Drift was James Dalton… the commasariat (logistics) chap in the film. He had over 25 years regular army experience, (more than Broxhead and Chard put together), and planned the defence of the station. - he had the experience.

Love this historical stuff.

Transsexual Transylvania

My wife went on a school trip of Natal battlefields, including Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift, but my school never did those, so despite growing up in Natal, I never visited either. I've never seen the movie. I did, however, grow up with all the descendants of the Zulus.

Consider the courage involved in attacking people armed with guns and cannons when you've got nothing but an assegai, a knobkierie and a hide shield. They were incredible soldiers, and it's a legacy they've never forgotten.

Did a battle field tour a decade or so ago with ex husband who was a military buff. Really impressive seeing it all. Interestingly I have an ancestor who was there on the day - portrayed as the German farmer in the movie!
