While the exact number of muscles required to smile isn’t completely known, the smallest of smiles takes about ten muscles. A small frown only requires three on average1. A small smile usually requires 10 muscles while a small frown requires 62. Smiling takes 12 muscles, while frowning only takes 113. If you think of a frown as just lowering the corners of the mouth, then it takes an equal number of muscles(4) to frown and to smile."
