"This has been going on about 5 years so it should really be what has this country come to." More like 500 years. Sad yes, but its always been like this throughout history

"As the world's population increases it is inevitable that we are going to have to witness an exponential amount of random behaviour. Sadly, not all good though " Very true.

"Are people getting more angry with life in general?" I think our tolerance of frustration seems lower - I dont have the stats but it feels like that sometimes.

"A woman was jailed last week for almost beheading a total stranger, released after killing her own mother. Really sad for all concerned." wasnt that a case of the woman telling police etc that she was going to kill?- more about the system to protect vulnerable sick people to commit horrendous acts against others, than some of the cases of simple idiot thuggery im thinking...

"Are people getting more angry with life in general?" Recessions, job losses, bankruptcy...anger often spills over into violent acts in times of financial worry. Although this case is probably down to a serious mental health problem....or crime of passion if it's found not to be random.

"Does the world getting angrier really explain a random stabbing on a bus?" No, I dont think it does. And I think in a way we need to wait until we know about the case and not make assumptions really.

"Are people getting more angry with life in general?I think our tolerance of frustration seems lower - I dont have the stats but it feels like that sometimes." im sure you're right on that, I'm finding myself much more tolerant than younger people I know. But going back, what would make someone kill that girl?

"Some people actually have argued that there is less violence today then ever before (see Stephen Pinker's 'Better Angels of Our Nature') But still, it's very tragic. Just down the road from where I work " Thanks for the reference, I like some of Pinker's work. As for our poor Brummy friend who's lost her life, we don't know the full facts yet, and so can't pin point the likely causes. Could be anything from mental health issues to awful acts of aggression.

"I went on holiday in Wales around 6 years ago, and on the first night a woman stabbed the person in the next tent. The world a scary place and i think its just going to get worse. I hope the person who carried out this act on the girl gets the full extent of the law thrown at them, x" Or (and I know this will be controversial) depending on their circumstances the help they need.

Sadly I have a feeling the person involved will have a history of mental health issues and not just a thug.

"As a father of a 15y/o daughter I see stories like this one in the news and it fills me with dread that my daughter could go out one day and never come home because some mental fruitcase decides he wants to kill her. I swear if that ever happens they better lock him up for the rest of my life cos I'll be waiting for the asshole when he got out otherwise. That poor kid had her whole life to look forward to, she was popular with her friends and a beautiful girl to boot. I can only surmise that this asshole thought he'd try his luck with her and when she told him to do one, he did."

Believed to be unknown to local mental health units. Very sad for all concerned.

"More violent crime here than in the usa. " The differential between the size and population alone makes your statement untrue.

"More violent crime here than in the usa. The differential between the size and population alone makes your statement untrue." How? If crime rates are measured per 100000 people? It doesn't make any difference what your total population is. However just googled it and apparently we come of worse because we have more crimes classified as violent over here, where as in the us it's only 4 !

"oh is a capita 100,000 then?" Per capita means 'per head of the population'. If your country has twice as many people as the country next door, you can expect twice as mant crimes. It's a long way from being an exact science.

"If he hadn't been sectioned, he'd have been exposed to the CPS/ jury system. We saw what the first Vicky Pryce jury made of the evidence. Is it preferable that people are sectioned (with all the delightful conditions some Fabsters think they'll enjoy) or should they be incarcerated and take their chances in mainstream prisons?" I'd like to agree with you but to knife a girl, to have a knife with the intention of using it and doing that on a bus first thing in the morning, he must have been disturbed. I dont have to like the outcome beyond the fact he's off the streets but he is off the streets. It doesnt bring the girl back though aye?!

I don't doubt for a minute he's disturbed but there's no way anything the system can do to restrict his behabiour, short of sectioning, will make a difference.

I pointed out earlier about school childrens behaviour on buses(we know it happens here too), there could be points where they just push that wrong person over the edge(especially if it appears apparent the metally unwell person is obviously showing symptoms) honestly not trying to lessen a tragic horrible loss of lives...but not jumping on a bandwagon of assuming what the papers/news headlines says is 100% accurate before its even went through a court of law. isnt anyone learning yet?, that the media is provoking reactions using cut down information?...because sometimes the in depth story just wont sell/gain as much interest as much
