Too subtle or too direct?

(She/ her) in Sensualityland

I have been told on the odd occasion that I can be too subtle and sometimes my message gets diluted and even lost as I am conscious of not wanting to offend somebody.

How do you communicate? Do you just say it as it is and worry about the consequences afterwards?

Or do you try you level best to not offend and risk that your message is not being understood?

Carlisle usually

I just word vomit it out.

Trying to be as bland and small and inoffensive as possible never really appealed to me.

If someone doesn't like me, that's okay. They can feel how they feel. And I can stay being me

Straight forward

Offence is taken, not given

To be honest, it’s a great filter.

You own it... that is good in my books.

I agree with you, and it can be a fine line sometimes but yes, it is also a filter for people who match one's personality and those who are likely to be offended by others, too.

Wherever

I just say it as it is and rarely worry about consequences.

I have a serious language barrier (and zero filter) and it might be one of the factors.

I don't think you can be too direct but the choice of wording can make a difference - To offend someone in a opening message is quite difficult unless there is some intention there, if it is part of message exchange and conversion which inadvertently causes offence that is different but that is not necessarily due to being too direct. Personally I have always preferred direct.

It is a lot easier in the forums or chat as there are always people that will take offence, for many different resons

I’m very literal so can only really deal in direct conversation. Those that can’t understand that are not my people. I’m never intentionally offensive but I can see that some people may not be comfortable with how direct I can be.

Manchester (she/her)

I try to write in a way that suits my audience and my intentions for that audience. That might sound like either go along to get along or lying, but... I think it's just social finesse.

Like you might say "hey bastard, you look like shit, where did you get dragged out?" to your best friend, but you wouldn't say it to your boss or the King (or insert other celebrity type person you care about)

If they're not getting it, when I'm being subtle, I'll end up spelling it out to them.

Lets be honest flirting with men here is like shooting fish in a barrel. Women it's much more difficult - I'm rubbish at it also - the language of women is very different - body language is really the only way I know and that's pretty difficult in real life - impossible here
