Went to friends for a Christmas Eve meal last night and had rack of lamb accompanied by 'twigs in blankets' a brilliant invention consisting of bundles of very small asparagus spears baked in bacon wrapping.

Definitely one for the future menu!

Today I'm tucking into (post King's speech) a turkey based equivalent of Coq au Vin. About the best thing to do with boring old turkey.

"First time ever, octopus for Christmas dinner . If we like it, it might become a tradition. "

Used to eat octopus a lot as a child in Jersey.

We only needed to follow the tide down rocky gullies and we would always find them by their habit of ejecting empty cockle shells on their chosen doorstep.

Then came the winter of 1963 and the intertidal shallow water froze and killed them off. The population has never really recovered since.

Delicious to eat. nice and tender when done slowly in a pressure cooker.
