Suppose it depends on if they changed direction and were successful. Me was genesis when Peter Gabriel left don't think Phil Collins was up to the mark but many would disagree

"AC/DC after Bonn died"
some would argue that was when their career took off…

I only saw the original line-up and wasn’t really a fan, so can’t do the comparison.

Very true. I almost was OK with Trevor Horn as the Drama album was good, but the treatment of Jon when he had to rest because of his health and instead of waiting they replaced him, then when they ousted Rick's son Oliver to bring back Geoff Downes was just unforgivable.

They were going to be a big anyway, Highway to Hell with Mutt Lange producing was their stepping stone to the big time, Bonn sadly missed out.

All my opinion of course

when Mick Jones was kicked out of the Clash around 82 , they carried on til 85 , but no one really remembers them after Mick left ...

Also when Glen Matlock was sacked from the Pistols , it was all over ..

Slipknot and Korn. I Don't listen to either of them much these day's, but after losing Joey and David the sound was never the same. Both bands were very drum driven groove wise.

Genesis:

Prog rock with Peter (The brains of the outfit)

Prog Rock with Steve (The backbone)

Radio friendly pop with Phil

Other band members have been and gone throughout the years, but these two departures were seismic.

At the Freddie Mercury tribute concert rumour has it George Michael performance was so good that he was approached by the other 3 Queen members to be their new lead singer. I guess we will never know if Queen with George as lead singer would have been as good.

Writing or singing?: we'll never know.

Though saying that, imagine Freddie going through George's solo career back catalogue....
