From the land of haribos.

I always do that and I also do it during the festive periods. I change what I say like, during christmas it was a happy christmas greeting and to the new year, it was happy new year and have a nice day, sometimes it leads to a little conversation, it is fun

Or you may make it worse because they want as little interaction with others as they possibly can.

Everyone assumes that greeting is welcomed and wanted when in reality the main thing is just don't be a twat with your behaviour.

I agree with a large extent with what is written above.

It is not 'manners' to talk to staff. Manners are hugely subjective and on here and in life generally it is one of those words to cast shame on the behaviour of some and drag them into conformity.

I'm a human being. I enjoy human exchange. If they seem as if they have the wish to converse I always chat.

If they don't seem to be in the chat zone or are very busy and we don't 'click' in that second then we don't make small talk

I wouldn't judge them either way. We navigate life and behaviours by the second there's no point in thinking everyone is you.

To be honest..... in an 8 hour shift , how many times must they hear things like .........ohhhhh I only came in for bulbs...... or have a nice day ........ Or smile it might never happen.

If you HAVE to talk it's for YOU not them, try to think of something original to say.

I work in a shop so I'm often on a checkout.

I speak to everyone,hello, please,thank you.

Some days that's all I want to do,I don't want to chat any further but when you say hello to the person and they look at you blankly and ignore you it's as if they don't see you as a person.

I'm usually a good judge of if someone doesn't want to talk so I keep it bare minimum but I always try to chat to elderly people, even I don't feel like talking myself. A little compliment or something.

You might be the only person to chat to them that day.

I don't know if it's an Irish thing but it's more rare for someone to not speak to you than not.

Nr Cardiff or at Chams Darlaston

I was reading the other day, how in the Netherlands they were trying to reduce loneliness. The Jumbo supermarket chain now has chatty checkouts in lots of its stores.

Customers who would like to pass the time of day with the cashier without being rushed can join a special yellow lane to buy their groceries.

I thought this was a great idea which they should think about over here.

Yep,I pretty much always talk to the check out staff at Tesco, Lidl or Aldi when I go. Your standing next to each other for about 5 mins and just ignoring each other, to me, would be weird. So I've kind of got to know them a bit, more like if I saw them in town I could say 'hiya' and they'd know who I was.

Other shops when it's something quick, I always say hello or Hiya and especially at this time of year say Merry Christmas.

It doesn't take much to show a bit of interest and it's nice to be nice. That's me anyway, and on that MERRY CHRISTMAS everyone......I'm sorry, it's just I'm excited!!

All of the above. For me, a smile, a hello, a thank you and a goodbye is plenty. But we're also reading you - the customer. We're gauging if you want to chat and how much you want from us. Some customers just want the bare minimum politeness, others are craving a little bit of human interaction
