As I drive for a living,I'm still astounded at the No of drivers both male and female who still use their Mobile phone whilst they are driving, it seems quite obvious that the current 3 points does not seem to Deter some drivers, is it not about time drivers caught should be Banned for say 3 months for their 1st offence, and if they are then caught again a 1 year ban

I tried to make a call once before it was made illegal and nearly sent the car into a ditch, so I turn the sound off now. There's nothing so important it can't wait.

I'm horrified by the number of people I see talking on their phones too and just recently a bloke in a flat bed truck almost drove into me on a roundabout while he was chatting on his phone then looked at me and pointed to his phone as if to say "can't you SEE I'm busy". Even worse in my opinion is texting because not only have you lost concentration you aren't even pretending to look at the road. We saw a guy using his laptop which was on the passenger seat and many times have seen lorry drivers watching dvds.

I don't know what will deter people really unless they start making examples of people

I'm sure in this day and age that car manufactures could come up with a device that prevents phones from being used in cars or other transport whilst the engine is running ?

They could but there is a bigger market for smart phone connectivity, if it was a safety requirement for new cars it would be a different story

Ill prob get slated here but this is my view -

They should remove all laws! Simply the police can't/ don't in force them and its a total nonsense in the most part! But if you cause a accident etc and its proved to be coz an distraction of ANY kind you should get hammered!

Recently a very old friend of mines father got killed by a of duty police officer who pulled out in front of his motor bike on her phone! There are campaigning to get her prosecuted as as it stands there saying she was on speaker phone and not holding the phone! When she actually was!

Simple facts are we ALL suffer from distractions when driving! We ALL have looked down away from the road to grab that cd/ snack/ drink/ fag/ check on kids/ adjust the radio etc and a mobile is just another!

As someone who drives for a living i find i suffer from far more potential accidents from people who clearly don't know the Highway Code or just ignore it for what ever reason! This should be fined ruthlessly in my opinion!

Bring on the rage!

Mark

I'd a friend of mine killed by a truck driver who was texting at thew wheel of his 44 ton truck, when he ploughed into the back of cars waiting at traffic lights.

It should be illegal for anyone to be talking on any mobile phone, hands-free or not and an automatic ban imposed for offenders.

"I don't think people should be allowed to talk on the phone at all when driving, even using hands free kits, if your engrossed in a conversation your full attention is not on the road"

And you think talking on a hands free while driving and watching the road is worse than (mainly) women looking at each other whilst engrossed in a conversation right there in the car?

Passengers are far more of a distraction than just talking on a phone, as long as it is hands free and voice activated. Most phones are capable of that now and cars are now becoming more common with some Bluetooth connectivity.

My car is both full Bluetooth and the Bluetooth is fully voice activated. No hands off the wheel, no looking at the phone and safer all round.

I would love to know where exactly that has been "proven"! I cannot find anywhere on the 'Net where that is the case! There are figures for phone related accidents & deaths, but none for passenger related accidents & deaths. It is accepeted that passengers are a part of driving as it has always been the case, much like alcohol being allowed because it has always been used socially! In fact, alcohol can be quite dangerous, as can passengers!

Still, I await some "evidence"...

If you heard that on a "Speed Awareness Course" than he/she was outside his/her terms of reference! His/her course was to address the your use of speed and the consequences of speeding, not talk about phone versus passenger accidents..

Not only that, the Government has no figures for passenger distraction related accidents. But any of the reported accidents could be attributed to either phone use or passenger distraction!

a large part of the course is driver observation and distraction....seriously, you should get yourself on one

also, the company that runs them use practising driving instructors who have to be up on the current issues regarding driver safetyso perhaps they know a bit eh?

Nice idea but the courts would be chocked up with people appealing and we would need to double the police out on the roads. I would go more for the camera system and see if that could be linked in. 3 months? Well maybe double the fine for starters but if they bring in the smoking ban in cars then maybe there could be some sort of community service they all could do.

Do agree with that having been behind a few people that were so engrossed in conversation with their passenger that their cars have either been weaving all over the place or driving at erratic speeds as they obviously aren't concentrating! Or parents yelling at kids in the back and clearly not looking ahead.

Evesham...were the stats for use of a phone or for hands free compared to passengers? Not doubting what you have been told, but would be curious to know what the stats actually measured. Some passengers will watch the road but I drove a few times with a guy that I'd try not to engage in conversation as he'd be trying to make eye contact whilst he/I was driving and I used to hate it. He'd even grab my arm sometimes to make a point...hated it.

I was so angered that when I left the motorway and had stopped I called the police and reported what had transpired, the response was did I get a photo?

Apparently it would have been ok for me to have phoned while driving and report what was happening! Go figure?

You'll tend to find a lot of these studies are carried out by motoring organisations or car insurance companies, as they evaluate the reasons behind all vehicle crashes.

Actually, there was one last week in the press, I think done by AVIVA, that said the most dangerous part of driving, with pasengers being carried, is the right turn out onto a main road.

It annoys me when people get to a check out in a supermarket and are on the phone and are too busy to at least say 'Hello' to the person serving them.

When did we become so reliant on our mobile phones, has anyone left theirs at home on purpose? just to have a quiet day
