By the time it actually gets here it's boring. -I don't like the disruption - enforced merriment. SMILE!! IT'S CHRISTMAS!! As if all your problems/stresses vanish in a puff of tinsel. - I hate the notion of "Christmas spirit". "I've still not finished the tree. Late in the week I got a sudden rush of festive spirit and finished a wreath and put up the paper chains and snowflakes and sorted out the garland but basically? Until I was in the mood I didn't force myself to do anything. You shouldn't feel guilty for not being full of festive cheer. It doesn't make you a Scrooge, it makes you human. When I moved to Asia I was safe in the knowledge that I’d finally escaped, given less than 1% of the Thai population identify as Christian, circa 5% of Malaysians and circa a third of Singaporeans; alas, there’s Christmas decorations in every shopping mall as far as the eye can see, the fucking thing is inescapable

However it is still very much your choice in how you choose to do your "Christmas", I know plenty of people that have fucked Christmas off and returned to celebrating the winter solstice. The powers that be are not forcing anyone to do anything they are simply capitalising on an opportunity presented to them, just as they do with anything else.
