So it finally happened.

The referee has been attacked on the pitch, this time by the club president. Turkey has now stopped all football being played.

Surely now it’s time for a huge overhaul of football.

Any ideas?

Similar state of affairs in Greece. All football to be played behind closed doors for 2 months after rioting after a game.

What's shocking to us is just another Tuesday in Turkish football.

I remember about a decade ago I think Fenerbache banned all men from entering the stadium after fan violence.

Their next home game 50,000 women & children were there & it was a sell out

It will all blow over...

But this was more than crowd violence. This was the president of the club attacking the referee.

Not that makes it better or worse than crowd violence but who will want to referee a game.

They are paid far less than those they referee over, I think the reports are his eye socket is broken

yet had that been in British football all 4 home nations would immediately be banned by Fifa. Turkey should be banned from all international and European club competitions. shocking scenese

Unfortunately, this was always going to happen. Football refs are given no respect, players dispute every decision and harass & intimidate referees without recourse.

They should employ similar systems to rugby union, where disputing a ref's ruling will result in you being marched back ten meters, and abuse/harassment will earn you a trip to the sin-bin.

This happened at the end of the game.

For me the main thing is it wasn’t a player but the club president.

Should fences around the pitch be put up to stop anyone but the players and officials being on the pitch with entry points for medical staff controlled by police?

That said it’s a game. Yes many see it as a huge thing but no one should be assaulted at their place of work

What's happened is atrocious and there's too many instances of ref's being abused here at all levels..

Would you be happy with losing your driving licence (assuming you have one) if a member of your family got done for being over the limit?

Hammer the club concerned and the assailant should face whatever the law applies but banning a whole countries clubs from a none domestic competition is bizarre and most likely not within the rules let alone any financial challenge..

Not only will that guy get banned from football for life, the referee will sue him for millions of euros. The guy is finished & he's probably bankrupted his own club in the process.

No need for draconian punishments against the entirety of Turkish football, this is an incident involving just 2 people.

If 2 cars are involved in a collision on the m60, you wouldn't ban everyone in Manchester from driving...

I have attended 6 matches in various parts of Turkey and each one of those games has been testosterone filled knob fest for the locals to rein-act a scene from the film Gladiator. Poorly managed segregation of opposing fans in one place police collusion with home supporters and the local media whipping up hysteria levels of local “pride”

The voice of reason, Graeme Souness perfectly summed up Turkish football when he planted a large club flag in the centre circle before kick off!

Just seen the video. Pretty shocking. Not really sure how you legislate for a club president pitch invading and throwing a jab.

Heysel being the event which led to that yes..

Not sure there's a precedent in Turkish football for what took place but to ban clubs in a European competition for what was a domestic issue won't run in my opinion..

I'll have to take your word for it. I'm certainly no aficionado of the egg chasing, particularly of the Union variety. Personally I can think of a dozen better things to do on grass, including picnics, and watching it grow

I’d like to see ref’s pulling out of fixtures in solidarity. If only to demonstrate to the players that games won’t happen without officials.

Then re-educate players so that only captains are allowed to approach ref’s. Any infringement on that gets properly punished with cards. Fully broadcast mic’s to cut out foul and abusive language towards officials. Red cards will soon teach them to keep their stupid traps shut.

Don’t allow management access to officials during the game either, they’re as bad as players sometimes.

The current trend of disrespect towards match officials has to be changed, and drastic measures are probably the only way to do it. The current system of asking for respect is clearly not working.
