Chelmsford

Security Guards at a London branch of MacDonalds, famous for it's Big Mac Burger, decided to mop the floor outside the shop where a homeless man was lieing on his sleeping bag leaving it wet and the man annoyed. Surprisingly, the man was actually outside the Nationwide Bank next door. Who is in the right here and who is in the wrong. The MacDonalds PR machine is wirring into action. What's going on here? It's all over the news

On the face if it the security guards were being deliberately nasty. It appears they have been 'permanently removed' which seems rather sinister to me

I can't see what the homeless man was doing wrong. I read the man at McDonald's lost his job? I hope so. How can you be so cruel? I could completely understand if he was causing trouble or urinating etc but I can't see anything to suggest that happened.

Pretty symptomatic of where we're at these days... and not entirely unsurprising.

Instead of solving the problems that lead to poverty and homelessness, we demonise and persecute with crappy legislation and shit like homeless spikes and benches designed to prevent reclining.

Instead of leaders committed to tackling deprivation we have career politicians spouting devisive sound bites aimed at fermenting hatred and division, just to make themselves stand out, and the homeless are an easy target. The thugs soaking that poor man on the street have the same mentality as the morons who listen to that sort of political hate speech and cheer in support.

It's all a bit fucked up.

I noticed in the comments of that particular Twitter account that it’s apparently common practice for businesses to hose down the front of their shops to discourage rough sleepers.

Whilst the sacking of the security guard is justified perhaps he was just doing as he was told which makes it worse.

They were security , from a security firm and not employed by McDonalds.

Everything else is mind reading and magical thinking.

It shouldn't have happened but it did and none of us know why the security guard wanted to mop the front of the premises.

I know I wouldn't want the mess they make outside of my store. A clean tent with a fair attitude is welcome.

There's a huge variety of homeless people and the ones outside Central and Moorfields in Liverpool totally disrespect the environment and the people using the city centre. The mess they make is unhealthy.

( Don't comment unless you step over it daily. I'm not talking about the lovely homeless person you know )

There are other regulars that I talk to and give to often. I don't think we can lump them altogether and discuss them as a bunch.

I'd help some but there are those that would be just as lost in their own home and need more help than I can give.

Disgraceful behaviour on the part of the security personnel.

They have no idea about the impact of such actions on that poor individual who is not homeless through choice.

I once faced tge prospect of homelessness and later worked on a project to raise money for a homeless charity and learned some really tragic things.

I have worked security in the past for shops n once the homeless person has left the outside of a shop n moved to another shop then security can't do anything unless they have permission from the other shop owner n then that is up to his employer if he should move them on again.

Unless it's in a shopping centre where one company owns all the shops then they can be moved out of centre.

As for hosing down the front or whatever he did, then very good chance that the orders to do that would have come from above , as that is not the sort of thing security would do.

But this is my experience of how we would do things.

So it seems. However, workers normally take instructions , so the question would be did they do just that or decide for themselves. If they were doing it on instructions then who gave them.

If it isn't company policy as Mc donalds seem to be saying then it won't be instructions from the manager. However he would know they are doing it outside the shop, in fact it looks like it might have been him who came to see the carry on.

It's a pretty fucking sad state of affairs. The homeless do not wish to use the hostels as they are rife with bullying, harassment and they believe they are safer on the street. To some degree they are. I went to Cardiff a few years back and was surprised to see tents in the town centre where homeless people were living.

It's a vicious circle because no matter how much you 'clean them up' (not just physically but mentally, and of addiction) the street will tend to call them back again.

Very sad state of affairs.

I like your comments Racy. You're intelligent, traditionally and emotionally. I'm going to add a twist though. Having grown up in relative poverty, had a lovely million quid London home, and experienced a number of years afterwards as both genuinely homeless and near homeless, I don't want to get off this land.

I want to change it.

But...I think it takes the UK to break up first, and all the habits accrued over the last 400 years of modern capital, started here, to be softened by the trauma of losing that identity...before the newer and better can start.

We're in for a bumpy 40 years, especially with climate change adding to the dissonance and fear.

But there is a better land to be won.

Just expect an awful lot more shit first.

A number of years ago, a mate of mine wrote a sing about a homeless lady he used to see regularly on his walk in to work.

He asked me if I'd produce a video to accompany it and it was released as a charity single to raise awareness and money for tgf l9cal homeless charity.

We we both very sad to hear that the young lady whom he'd written it about had passed away, so we dedicated it to her memory.

The man was outside the Nationwide Bank. Was there a cash point? Was he aggressively begging,? Did people feel comfortable withdrawing money but who knows? Not enough detail in the story but there is more to this than meets the eye

I have a security licence and I know I'd never do that in any site Id work at in fact I'd usually buy someone outside on a cold night a coffee and a sandwich

It was s disgusting way to treat someone who is vulnerable and in need of care and support. The government has had hate campaigns against top many people who should not be vilified, which cultivates disrespect.

It's a really harsh place for the homeless in central London, so I hope he gets to find better things soon.

This is the problem with social media. We always see small part of the story and jump to conclusions.

The security guards were cleaning up a lot of mess clearly. Similar thing happened outside my local Tesco where several homeless drug addicts took turns and turned the street into a wasteland of piss and shit. Customers couldn't even use the ATM machines next to the store for months.

It was only ‘fair enough’ if they do the same to the gangs of semi-feral teenagers that seem to hang around outside most city centre branches these days. But they don’t.

The homeless man has given an interview. Apparently he is Irish and left home at 17 and had ADHD and PTSD and other mental health issues. McDonalds have donated new bedding and he was understandably not happy. This will run a while longer
