Somewhere In The Ether…

Ey up good folks

I’ve presently got a real hankering for political/spy/conspiracy thriller themed films.

With the above in mind, would you be kind enough to list me your personal favourites in said genre/s?

If there’s any listed that I have not yet seen, you can bet your gluteus maximus that I’ll be on it like a shot (the film I imply, not your arse….although I admittedly do enjoy a nice rump…)

Superb film!

Also of note starring Robert Redford in the same genre: Spy Game and Three Days Of The Condor

One of my absolute favourites!

That final twist ending (The identity of Yuri) was sublime!

Anyone liking Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy should watch the original TV show, and the follow up series Smiley's People.

Also recommend by the same writer, John le Carré, The Night Manager.

The film version of Tinker Tailor with Gary Oldman is pretty good too.

Smiley’s People - an absolute classic series The late, Alec Guinness was brilliant in the role of George Smiley (He sadly never put his light sabre to use but… )

Oh and Devotion... True story about a black fighter pilot. If you don't cry at the end, you've got no soul. And watch the credits.

I must shamefully confess that I cry a fair bit at TV series and films

Happy tears, sad tears….

I thought the third one had been canned because they couldn't fund it (the first two were crowd funded).

I’ve just checked and regretfully, due to bankruptcy and outstanding funds owed by the makers, the highly anticipated third instalment does sadly appear to be in development limbo

Hertford

If you've seen all these I'll be surprised:

The Conversation - Gene Hackman. Brilliant.

The Manchurian Candidate (1962 version) - Brilliant twist in it

The Lives of Others - superb German language film about the Stasi spying on people

Enemy of the State - Gene Hackman, Will Smith ( I know, I know, but he is good in this, trust me )

The Little Drummer Girl - about The Mossad. great on the dirty work and the morality of spying

Defence of the Realm - my personal favourite. Gabriel Byrne is a journalist who uncovers a terrifying secret that the British Government will do anything to keep hidden. Brilliant 80s film.

You're welcome. That suggests that you've seen DOTR? I'm impressed - not many ppl I recommend it to have, Btw, The Little Drummer Girl is the 80s film version with Diane Keaton.

They made a TV series a few years back but I never saw it so cannot testify to its quality.

Vale of Glamorgan

Fail Safe an early 60s Cold War thriller featuring Henry Fonda.

Love Seven Days in May btw, a classic.

Whilst not a spy thriller, The Bedford Incident is a Cold War nuclear parable which is terrifically tense, and features Richard Widmark and Sidney Poitier.

And if you like 60s British thrillers then you can’t go wrong with The Ipcress File.
