Smart plugs

This might be very common knowledge but I have just discovered smart plugs (for the appliances, not butts! Lol). I will now be able to (at least in theory) control when my heating comes on before I get home from work. Let's hope it works as well as advertised - would be great to come home to a warm home without having to keep the heating on all day.

I've got a few. They are very good. I have the Nest thermostat to control my heating. And I can control it remotely.

Hope you get the benefit I've had.

It took me till this year to realise I could use them for my Christmas lights. I won't tel you how long I've had smart plugs for.

Though in the bedroom my voice activated lights are a good feature.

Paper Town Central, Essex.

I have to hold my hands up and say sorry, I'm a dinosaur...

I don't possess any smart plugs. I prefer to use the tried and tested method of either a digital timer or a good old fashioned finger to flick the socket switch.

Just call me Grandad.

Because I am.

Around and about

I've got them for most things with a plug in my house, and outside too! I control the garden lights via Alexa and the smart plugs. All my lamps, hoover and kitchen lights are controlled through this method as well and I adore my smart kettle, on that note 'Alexa, kettle on' I'm off for a brew

Most of my flat is 'smart' nowadays; lights, kettle, radiators, TV, hifi, air purifier etc.

If ever the Internet goes down (like it did last week) I get reminded just how lazy and dependent I've become. :D

Please don't run heaters and big appliances through smart plugs. That's a recipe for disaster. Yes they are rated for it, but they won't take it in the long run.

Other than that I think they are amazing.

Got a house full of smart plugs, heaters, lights and probably other stuff I've forgotten.

What he said. Be aware that some smart plugs like the Tapo range have had sticky relays. Turn them on and they might not turn off until you tap them lightly on the wall.

"I can change a fuse. I'm smart."

Problem is that a 13amp fuse (biggest in a plug) doesn’t actually blow until just over 20amps. 13 amps is what it’s rated to run at.

The plastic the plug, socket and smart plug are made from starts to melt somewhere around 17-18 amps.

So to avoid toxic air and then fire please please take heed of what I said.

I am an electrical engineer and I speak from experience and education, not from what I read on the internet.

Tapping tapo as well, that made me giggle. How appropriately they managed to name that one.

Leigh-on-Sea

I have a couple in my living room with lamps plugged into.

They're far better than the old plug in timer types because I have them grouped in the app to work together, so only have to adjust one timer, and it's a lot easier than trying to do it bent down at the plug or down behind the sofa.

Got a smart light bulb on the landing too

An "Expert" Eh, well you can get 15 amp fuses that fit a standard plug too, not that one would use them indoors though, a workshop yes.

That said I share your reservations, I am a retired person of electro mechanical experience and personally not keen on having adaptors of any kind turning on or off things other than the odd light (3 amp fused of course).

Though I will add all of my indoor and workshop lighting is now L E D's.

I use Tapo and have never had a problem. Saves me a small fortune having everything on over night

A town near you

When I was young and living in a bedsit I would put my dinner in the oven and turn it on but then screw the fuse out of the socket then about an hour before I got home from work I would ring the landline in the house and told who ever answered to scre the fuse all the way in. Walla dinner was cooked by time I got home!

Not a smart plug I know lol

I get what you are saying and can see you are saying in a friendly way. Hell I’ve even removed 1000amp + fuses from domestic plugs(threaded 6mm steel bar)

But please on this subject let’s just stick to Bs 1362/3s as fitted domestically.

I genuinely worry about this and don’t want anyone hurt because we can chat knowingly about fuses and stuff. In fact I’m itching to reply cheekily to your 15 Amp fuse but someone may think I’m being serious and do something daft.

I mean this quite respectfully, not trying to argue with you.

Yeah, they’re great. I have three Wi-Fi power strips, in other words extension lead, you can turn them off individually and on individually and set timer for them to come on handoff, great job

I've just worked out how to do the timer so the lamp comes on as it gets dark, great for coming home late!

I've got 2 more... So just figuring out what to do with them!

I thought smart bulbs would be a good idea ...but no.

The two smaller household members switch each others colours around and they piss each other off deliberately in the process. It's funny though. And they still leave the lights on. I had to set Alexa to turn lights off at certain times.
