That man/woman is lucky

Have you seen or heard this said when someone regards someone's partner to be super hot.

I've known someone get deeply offended by someone saying they were a lucky man.

What do you make of the statement?

There's always a narrative that one person in a couple should be grateful than the other. Physical side doesn't come into it, if they are both good people, they are lucky to have each other.

Surely looks are only part of it.

Saying someone is lucky based upon their partners looks I would take no notice of. And beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

Someone said to me once

“No one knows what goes on behind closed doors”, could be the most attractive person physically and mentally horrible

My response is always that there's no luck involved. The people I adore I adore because they're amazing, it's fuck all to do with luck, I wouldn't have hooked up with any random noodle that happened to initiate contact at that moment instead of the people I choose.

I often hear that my partners are lucky to have me. They're not. They're willing to put up with all my chaos and shit, they showed me who they are and that person feels right to me. Luck is for coin tosses and roulette, neither of which I deal with.

Not really a compliment. Can be seen as a backhanded way of meaning you’re not good enough for them

Luck works both ways, to find them, to find a way to make it work and not to run when things get tough

I've had people say Mrs S is gorgeous and I'm lucky, but my view on that is I feel the same. It's not to imply I'm falling short but quite simply I'm lucky to have crossed paths and now I get to spend most my time with them. They may actually mean it in a negative way but that's generally how I take it

I don't think it's always as sinister a comment as some may assume.

I think it's sometimes their way of saying they wish they were in the position of the supposed lucky one.

Paper Town Central, Essex.

I'd never use that saying.

I find it deeply offensive and demeaning both parties of the couple.

Sexualising one person and saying the other isn't good enough.

Absolutely no reason for that language.

Just my thoughts.

You may not agree but that's what discussion is for.

It's a throwaway phrase meant to compliment both parties I think. At our daughter's wedding all our son in laws friends were telling him he was punching etc. Our daughter is stunningly beautiful and on her wedding day even more so if that's possible but even though I knew it's 'just what people say' and they meant it as a compliment I thought it was rude.

It was the mistaken click of the wrong name on an internet chat room.

I (the male half) have had it forever. I have heard it said by randoms in regular clubs/pubs. I have even had, less sensitive friends ask ‘jokingly’ how my kids are so beautiful. It used to worry me. I wanted to be that guy that could pull without trying instead of having to be smart, funny, confident and actually loving women’s company. Then I realised the end result was the same and, if I had been born deveststingly attractive, I would probably have been an arsehole and my knob would have fallen off from over use! I consider myself to be the luckiest man alive to be with my partner and luckily she feels the same about me. Strangely we were counting our blessings about how wonderful life is only last night on the sofa. We are not rich but we have each other, fabulous kids, a roof over our heads, food on the table and annual holidays and a few nights away together . We also get to have three different people at the same time giving us sexual pleasure all at once on occasion. Life is good. But, to return to the OP’s question. It’s not nice to hear so I would avoid saying it. It actually diminishes those saying it. Mrs Merton has a lot to answer for.

Yes I agree with this.

It's an insult to the person it's being said to, you might as well say I don't value you as a person and your partner has questionable judgment..

Recently, on a weekend away with my guy some random stranger stopped him and told him he was so lucky to have me, high fived him, and even gave him a hug. A complete stranger in a vanilla setting. It was awful. In addition, this man was with his partner. I felt terrible for her as he did this in front of her too. It’s so icky, as if a prize has been won by having the partner one has.

I had a very sexy BF at uni and knew people thought he was way too hot for me! I’ve equally dated guys where friends have asked me what I could possibly see in them physically. So have had it said both ways and genuinely hasn’t offended me - it’s a clumsy compliment but still one

Yeah, pretty much this. I don't think it's an OK thing to say. It's so shitty and provides nothing positive. And who are you anyway to judge who is and isn't attractive and then speak about a couple like they aren't deserving of each other because you think one isn't as good looking.

Absolute bellend behaviour.

In my opinion if it’s solely related to the aesthetics looks of one partner, it’s in bad form.

If someone tells my partner they are lucky to have me because I’m such a thoughtful, kind, intelligent lady then it’s not negative in my eyes.
