"My boiler packed in on Christmas eve. Couldn't get it sorted for over a week." Recently had this happen at mine. Three days to sort it and I thought that was ages. I cannot imagine over a week without heating.

"Check your coolant OP. Heater problems can sometimes be due to low coolant. Or a blockage in the heater matrix. Does the car take longer than usual to warm up? Does the temperature guage sit in the middle of it's range or does it vary from about a quarter to a half? Could be signs that your thermostat is stuck open" Just the fan thats not blowing.. I'm hoping its just a wire or the resistor, looking at £400 for a new blower . Could be a long winter if its that

"On the coldest day in decades, my boiler packed in few years ago now. It was horrendous. " This happened to us in that winter of 2009/10 when it was minus 18°C! No heating or hot water at all for several days

"On the coldest day so far this autumn... My car heater blower has decided to not work.. Murphys law strikes.. whats happened to you at the most inconvenient times..? P.S. Would any ladies be kind enough to warm my frozen bits please " Our washing machine packed in just before Christmas a few years back, the parts were out of stock and the European suppliers had JUST shut down for a two week Christmas and NY break. We had to go to the launderette but these are few and far between and aren't open much outside our working hours so we really struggled to do the laundry at the wettest and coldest part of the year and it cost a bloody fortune!!

Could be a long winter if its that " if it's happened on the Coldest day it could be motor brushes, if they are on their last legs then the cold can be the final straw for them, new brushes are usually £5-£10. Easy enough to do yourself with basic tools like a socket set, maybe some torx depending on the car. Just remember to disconnect your car battery 1st or you might need to take into a garage to have the airbag codes cancelled

"My car is 20 years old. The heater takes around 20 minutes of the engine running to get warm, the seals are gone so there is condensation and frost on the inside and the aircon broke 5 years ago. Apart from that she's been great. " the thermostat on most cars are a cheap and easy to do job, DIY, just make sure that you don't over tighten the bolts when reassembling, if you don't have a torque rachet then just under tighten and see if it leaks, then nip it up till the leaks stop
