Just been looking at the impending population figures for 2020 and its frightening. There might not be enough food for everyone! How would you combat the increasing population?

Well them that dont have the money will have to bloody starve then wont they!!!!

Or burgle the people who do have money so they can feed themselves.

Or murder the neighbours and turn them into pies.

It will manage itself somehow.

Has done for millions of years, not alot to change that now. Despite all thsi climate change stuff.

Nautre will win

Only because that's how we currently do things.

If you want to see how much food is simply thrown away each day stand at the back of any major supermarket and see exactly what gets binned.

Ask any long time supermarket employee how things have changed with regards to staff shopping.

Butter mountains etc etc etc.

We in the west would rather bin it than give it away, in fact I will rephrase that, we in the west because of bureaucracy HAVE to bin it rather than give it away.

Change that mindset and we will have a start, no one on this planet NEEDS to go hungry, WE choose to let them

Tis true!!!

Its sickening how much food gets thrown away.

And yes - when i worked in a restaurant - we werent even allowed to take home the cakes/desserts that were left over at the end of the night. They HAD to get thrown down the sluice.

Luckily most of the meals were made to order.

And supermarkets need to stop being so greedy and the stuff that is going out of date that day needs to be reduced at midday not 9pm at night.

Miss,

We simply need to change the rules, all that stuff could go to a whole host of charities who could feed just about every homeless, elderly blah blah person in the country.

theres only 2 ways i can think of

1 is to have a cull , perhaps the old , ugly , or both ( thats me gone )

2 is to have either voluntary , or compulsary birth control .......... mayby people could be discouraged by not providing child benifits and or tax breaks

one thing is for sure something will have to be done as in 50 or 100 years the globe will be overun

yes we can cut waste in the wealthy countries and give more to the poor countries , but lets say a field can support ten rabits , if you put a little extra food in the field it can support 12 , but there will allways be numbers 13 or 14 on the edge of starvation

its the same with any group of animals , humans included , lions , rhinos , wolves , whatever

nature has a way of exploding its population every time there is any kind of a food glut

so no matter how much food aid you give to a country that is short of food there will allways be those on the edge that are hungry

In this country, stop paying people for having kids and limit families to 2 children, as in China.

We live on a small island, each new kid means another home, car, job in the future.

It doesn't take much working out.

On the other hand and much more fun would be "Open Season" on chav's like they have for pheasants!

Not wishing to appear rude but that is so Sun/Mirror/Mail/Express

Drive from Manchester to Glasgow and have a look at just how much land is available and then come back and tell us there's no room in GB

Theres feckin pots of room here and in France, Germany, Spain etc etc etc but the will has to be there to utilise it.

As regards USA and Canada and the like you have to fly over them to be able to contemplate just how fuckin big they are.

Girls, this is going to sound V patronising but get in your car and go drive the M6 from Manchester to Glasgow and just see how fuckin vast the land either side of that road is.

Now try to imagine just how much other land is beyond the next hill or your line of sight.........

I know we have vast fields - and fields next to fields, i am an avid walker and love to walk in those said fields.

MOST of the land has got either livestock or crops.

Our farmers are suffering in this day and age as it is, start minimising the land any more, and it will make matters worse.

Another downside of laying down so much more concrete is where the hell will all the rain go???

At the moment it waters our fields and they mop up most of the excess rain fall.

our drainage systems are crap at coping with what rain we do have - now

IF we ar supposed to start having more rain due to climate change

AND

We lay down acres of concrete all over our lovely green fields,

WHERE is all that water going to go????

And are our oceans getting bigger as it is???

Now (gawd i am on a rant here)

IF the government and coucils actually sorted out all the run down houses that are ALREADY built and utilised all these properties - and boy there are a few about 5 miles away from me, then that would house many peple.

There are several estates that i used to have to drive thru where half of the estate is boarded up and run down and un used. Kick out the other thugs and get them houses built back up again - surely cheaper than buying new land to build on?????

All the governments in the world should adopt a strategy as the Chinese did decades ago..one child families. Within a few generations the population would be down to something as was in the middle ages. Failing that, if events in 2012 occur as is anticipated that problem will be accademic. There will be too few people left on the planet!

But then we'll have the huge international rescue and aid industry swinging into action to save the lives of people we (as a world) can't feed, water, house or employ.

There are times when we should accept that nature knows better than we do how to run the planet and if that means a few major disasters or plagues (swine flu?) then so be it.

Anyone who's spent any time in hospitals recently will be only too well aware that there's old folks being kept alive for no obvious reason.

92% of all new drugs fail the safety checks and are never brought to point of sale. Of the 8% that are, they are responsible for the 4th and 5th most common causes of deaths in US hospitals. Maybe modern meicine isn't always quite the life-saver it's held up to be?

I predict that in the future:

* Our crops will be genetically modified to extract the maximum amount of energy, thus reducing the dependency on mass produced food.

* Livestock will be grown fatter and taller to provide more meat.

* Milk will be replaced altogether with a vitamin enrichment supplement.

* We will have no fast food restaurants, junk food such as biscuits, crisps and sweets will be banned.

* All products will have minimal packaging punishable by ten years jail for breach of Anti_Pollution laws yet to be drawn up.

* I will be dead, thank fuck.

I'm actually fairly liberal politically, but perhaps Capitalism has it's place here?

Completely cut off any sort of financial aid for people having children (got a baby girl arriving in a matter of weeks ourselves). That means that only those who have the means to support a baby will want to have a baby.

This would have the 2-fold benefit of improving the gene pool by stifling breeding in the sub-working classes as a means of getting council houses faster, and reduce the tax burden on the working classes (or allow tax money to go on things more beneficial to those who pay for it).

As most of the population problem comes from developing countries though, we are faced with the ethical question of whether we're helping at all by providing medicine, water and food to lands which nature currently thinks are unfit for sustainable human inhabitation.

It's all kinda tied into this climate change stuff. Green taxes wont help, but aiming to limit what we do (and our population size) to that which we can sustain with what we have locally isn't a bad idea.

Well what would you suggest?

I don't mean to tar anyone but whatever decision is taken to control population rise it's going to be unpopular and offend someone. All I'm suggesting is that perhaps pure Capitalism has this one right?

You yourself shouldn't take too much offence anyway. Child benefits themselves aren't a bad thing, but state sponsored breeding for the under-classes certainly is.

How does one tackle those who'd ambition at 15 years old is to get knocked up to get a council house without hurting those working single parents like yourself?

What might be nice though, would be to reduce population expansion by a reduction in the number of those who culturally aim to contribute nothing. It's a well known fact that professional singles and couples in Western Europe are having fewer and fewer children. Meanwhile slobs who don't want to work are having kids left, right and centre - all paid for by the tax payer. All I'm saying is that if you're going to make it harder for one of these groups of potential parents to have children, you choose the benefits class. The easiest way to do that is to remove child benefits.

Still wont be popular and I'm certain someone will cry "But think of the children" but frankly that's why we're in this mess in the first place where people don't need to lift a finger because the state won't see them impoverished.

there already is a deterrant, its called the law, but its never used, it's about time these kids spouting out babies feel the full force of the law, the children should also be removed a placed with loving parents who cannot have their own, wasters!!! but why not they get away scot free, even though under age sex is a criminal offence.

I've got an entire side of the family who are said scum and where they live (in Perth (and Stirling prison)) it is like Beruit, but they don't see it as Beruit because they've never known anything different.

All they care about is how to milk as much money out of "the brew" as possible.

I'm not trying to "blame" a class... merely suggesting that the first target for population growth cutbacks is them... which is maybe the same thing...

no dont be offended please!!

have you ever been on benefits? i dont know how some people do it but their kids generally better dressed than mine off what is basically peanuts! save the children classes child poverty as income less than 13000 a yr?

then some religions advocate large families and frown on the use of birth control how do we deal with them bearing in mind the human rights act??

there are definately some families who the thought of work scares them shitless and we talkin 3 generations who have never worked should there be a state sponsored job scheme which makes them work it factories or somethin state owned?? or cut off daytime tv and pay off jeremy kyle therefore puttin him out of a job cause he has no "clients" ?

I half-heartedly tried once... I lost my job then went to see what was involved. I didn't qualify as I hadn't been unemployed long enough so I just took the first thing I could. The whole system seemed arse-about-face and geared against people trying out a job incase it didn't work out. I could well appreciate that once on the dole one might be reluctant to give it up again...

Maybe we shouldn't give any money to people at all. What if we gave people free shelter and vouchers which could be spent in supermarkets? (But only to buy food and supermarket brand clothing... not fags/booze/The Sun etc).

The shine might come off not working then. In the mean time, legalise drugs like Holland (and control where they can be used like Holland). I don't like the idea of drugs myself (I quite like my life when I'm zoned in and don't feel the need to escape from reality) but it would hurt the black market (again, like Holland).

State-sponsored kids would then be fed and clothed (albeit rather basically) but couldn't have an XBox 360 to play with unless mum or dad got a job.

The best bit of all though, is that with all the dole-jockeys wearing Tesco jeans and trainers would making being a chav too expensive. Only the working people could afford to dress like a chav and all of those people know what a chav dresses like and wouldn't want to be one. Sorted!

Horrible thing to say is that part of the population explosion is due to keeping the old alive in sick beds and also intervention in third world states. May be the impending religious wars that are sure to come will negate fear off overpopulation.

".......Mummy Nature will sort it all out for us.... "

I'd like to believe that but there's always some bastard trying to get in the way of nature's best intentions.

Finding cures for new illnesses, providing relief for disaster zones and generally doing stuff to 'save the planet'.

It'll all end in tears.

The answer is machine guns.

Seriously though I doubt there will be a problem. Agriculture will get more intensive with GM crops.

No worries everyone.

Will intensive agriculture produce more water? I reckon that's where conflicts will start/ intensify over the next 50 years.

Doubt any other party would be any different as they all have been lining pockets as the claims fiasco shows.

2 is to have either voluntary , or compulsary birth control .......... mayby people could be discouraged by not providing child benifits and or tax breaks

I completely agree that child benefits do encourage people to spawn offspring for the sake of it. I know a girl whose career plan is to have five kids.
