"As a rugby fan, I love listening to Flower of Scotland, The Fields of Athenry (plus the other PC one), Land of our Dads. But I am always a little miffed as to why England do the British NA. I love a bit of Jerusalem but only when it comes to the 'Bring me my bow' bit and a bit of oomph goes into it. Other than that we can go for Thunderstruck but change the lyrics to something English ish." We definitely ought to boyzone it up, I love “Ireland’s Call”, it’s even got a key change (and presumably a standing up from one’s chair, if one is not already standing up)! Compared to the dreary dirge that is god save the (king/queen/princess/golden pixie) it’s a fucking ripper, as our Aussie cousins might say.

"I love a national anthem that takes a proper “run up” before you get start the words… Italy is a good example… Argentina is good, chiles Is great, Uruguay is epic! But most South American anthems take a good old warm up! ![]() Most sound like an Ice Cream van tune.

"I would like at sporting events for England to have their own anthem. The other “home” nations do. Maybe Jerusalem " The lyrics of Jerusalem are nonsense, based on William Blake's bizarre theology. "And did those feet...?" No, they didn't. Of course they didn't.

"And did those feet...?" No, they didn't. Of course they didn't." I think you need to finish the whole phrase! And did those feet In ancient times Walk upon England's mountains green? Obviously the answer is no. The Holy Lamb of God was NOT upon England's pleasant pastures seen.

"The Spanish national anthem doesn’t have any words! It’s just the tune. Gbat " There's 2 reasons for that! 1) It was originally written without words, it's just instrumental. 2) The Franco Govt did put some lyrics to it. Perhaps understandably, these were ditched post 1975......

Obviously the answer is no. The Holy Lamb of God was NOT upon England's pleasant pastures seen. Sorry, I thought that was the point of my post. Yet William Blake thought the answer was yes. " The poem isn't usually interpreted literally. Blake wasn't saying he thought Jesus DID indeed walk among the green and pleasant mountains and pastures. It's more the use of a Christian myth known to Blake and its application to the rapidly changing world he inhabited at the time. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-35304508 There are plenty of more detailed analyses of the poem online, but links can't be posted to them. Blake was a Christian but he really disliked the CofE and most organised Church religious observance and there's also speculation he might have been referring to churches when he referred to dark Satanic mills (rather than actual mills). Lots of ways to interpret the same thing though!

"I think older generations stood for the National anthem but that's changed over time. I wonder how many anthems are sang in schools as I can't remember our being, it's probably why we've never really gotten behind it." We had to sing it at important assemblies and we learned all the verses for the 50th anniversary of VE Day. However I don't think being able to sing a song or being trained to stand up for it, is a necessary or relevant thing in the 21st century. Being a good citizen is far more important than parroting a song that most people don't actually feel much investment in.

And any where the Head wanted to pretend we were a fancy public school and not a fairly bog standard state school.
