I'm actually happy being from Northern Ireland. The whole of Ireland is a beautiful place, healthcare isn't too bad, and people like 'the craic' which leads to daily laughter. The weather isn't always great, but Europe is a short plane hop away and is cheap enough to get to for some sun, or a change of culture if needed

Ah, but you'd miss the beauty that is Ireland. If you could move the whole country a little closer to the sun that might be nice, but it might also change the landscape with it which just wouldn't work for me.

Yup. The Nordic/Celtic nations are "in the zone" for key traits I love.

Just...weather...warm sand on toes..too nice to not have on tap for me.

Couldn't do "hot Europe", but "pleasant most of the year" is too ingrained in my wish-list.

It was fairly easy to get an ancestry visa - and thence permanent residence and citizenship. We felt it was our ancestral home and we felt culturally in tune with it. We also thought it would be a modern, first world country that was part of the EU - giving our daughter access to a whole subcontinent as she grew up.

We were sort of right. No regrets though.

Having lived all over the world I can say I am more than happy with the nationality I have.

We like to denigrate these islands but having seen how most of the world is governed and controlled I am always grateful to be able to come home.

A UK passport is an amazing asset in far more places than almost any other country - when things go wrong you want to be holding one of those documents.

Big thanks to everyone for contributing.

The take-away was that almost everyone's pretty happy with what they've got, would be happy with some bolt-on bits (!?), and where we're being let down, we're smart enough to do something about it.

For me, if I could get that Irish character, transplant it to Biarritz, and find a way of calling that English (hell, just "human" would do tbh)...I'd be pretty set up for my years.

But it don't work that way...

It’s true, we love to whine but the UK passport is the goal of millions around the world and can take years and cost hundreds of thousands to get one
