Mirtazapine and weight

Back when we were "locked down" (remember that?) I got really into working out at home and, after a couple of years, was fitter and better built than I've ever been.

Sadly my wife didn't appreciate it at all and it didn't lead to any improvement in our (almost non-existant) sex life.

Since then, I've had some mental health problems (long story) and I've given up the exercise. To make matters worse, I've been prescribed Mirtazapine 45mg, which is making me permanently hungry. I'm not exactly fat, but I'm definitely a few kg over my "fighting weight" and I know it's only going to get worse unless I change my habits. I feel awful about my appearance. I basically feel like I've given up. I have no motivation to get fit and toned again, because my wife didn't seem to care anyway.

Is there anyone on here who could help to provide some motivation for me? Perhaps someone in a similar situation - so we could encourage each other?

Can you go back to your GP and ask if there is an alternative medication?

Well 1st off thumbs up for trying to get your mental health sorted, and that you're willing to share your feelings.

I've taken them before the only side effect I had was it gave me mad dreams I actually liked that. But eventually they stopped working so I changed medication.

I'm in a different situation being disabled and not really able to exercise, but after 10yrs with my ex 6 year before accident, all of a sudden she started to hit the gym and get fitter etc. No issues with her wanting to do that, but she started spending less and less time with me being in other rooms than me. And not wanting to have sex with me. So I questioned her about our relationship and she was all I love you, you're the only for me and I want to spend the rest of my life with you etc.

About a week later I got hit with the we need to take a break, I knew then she didn't want me said it was I didn't want to get married and have kids, and I told her let's discuss it then more different excuses and the last one was I just want to be single and go out with my mates etc. Next minute she's in a relationship then kids and marriage. So my thoughts are it was down to my physical inability for sex etc. and now I'm wondering if I brought another guy into the mix we would have stayed together. Back then I wasn't into the scene, but these days I wish I was, and even the thought of her having sex with another guy now is such a turn on. Plus from what I've heard she's into the scene, but I don't really have anyway to make contact.

Can the dose be reduced gradually? Motivation is hard to summon when you are feeling like you are.

I'm fat but swim 3/4 times a week and feel great after, it is true about finding the right exercise to suit.

Treat yourself to things you enjoy and make yourself feel happy.

Antidepressants are extremely helpful to sum but maybe mask the real problems. Counselling is a good avenue as well.

Good luck.

Wheelz - sounds like you've been through the mill mate. Don't look back. I'm hope everything works out well for you. You seem like a nice chap, so I'm sure it will!

Re. Alternative medication, I've been on various antidepressants (plus various counsellings g and therapy) for over 10 years. First citalopram, then sertraline, now the "Marzipan". Along with some big life changes it is helping with my mood. I do plan to reduce my dose over time (and eventually come off it). But now is not the right time to adjust anything. It's just unfortunate that it's making me hungry. I've since discovered that they actually prescribe it to people with eating disorders because its known to increase appetite.

I just feel like I'd have more motivation to cafe about myself if I felt like someone was backing me up and encouraging me.

My fat ass saw Marzipan…

I’m struggling too, in a real rut, so I wrote a list, maybe remind yourself of how you felt being fit after lockdowns (well done!) my motivation to keep fit:

Health - avoid, if possible, problems associated with being overweight

My kids - I want to remain healthy and active for them

Outdoors - I’m into walking, climbing, biking, kayaking- I’ve got to be fit to do them

Clothes - I want to be able to fit in my tailored suits - they can’t add material!

Look good naked - self explanatory given what we do but I love being naked on beaches so..

Feel better - I know how I feel after exercise- I feel good, I feel more energised

Sleep - I sleep better, I don’t snore

These things are for me, I’m not doing it for anyone else (okay, kids).

Remind yourself of how could you felt, try and get that feeling again but do it for yourself, nobody else.

SilverFux - Thank you, that's actually a good idea and your list is pretty much exactly what mine would be. I certainly felt better in myself when I was fit, even if noone else seemed to notice or care. And staying healthy is important to me.

I'm not so bothered about fancy clothes, but that's just me! Having said that, I did buy some nice trousers back then which are now too tight to wear comfortably.

I’d stay on them. That appetite is going to be vital to give you all the energy you need when you get some motivation back. You’ll be fitter and stronger than ever

Side note. I tried them after I was knocked off my bike and had my leg broken. I was hoping for a huge increase in appetite as I’ve always been very active and very slightly built. Sadly they made no difference at all for me. I was so miserable I actually lost weight despite not being able to do anything but lie on a mattress on my kitchen floor for 4 months. Yes, I’m lockdown

Good point. Although I'm interested in toning up and losing a couple of inches around my waist, rather than building muscle. So I'm not planning to hit the protein shakes.

Really, I just want to find a buddy for mutual encouragement (and, if female, admiring each other's progress!?)

Carlisle usually

It never affected my eating during the brief time I was on it. Just gave me some of the most vivid and excessively sexual dreams I'd had in years.

My friend recently weaned himself off it as he'd find himself crouched in the kitchen at 2am scarfing a mango by the light of the fridge innards.

Better a mango than a tub of Ben & Jerry's!

I think if it was giving me incredible sex dreams I'd be in no hurry to come off it! I had one last night (waking up for work was a bummer), but I think that was just the result of having been horny for days and not having had sex for over a month.

I can't say I've had more vivid dreams than before, although I'm definitely sleeping better. That's probably a combination of the drugs and having quit the rat race.

Mirtazipine can make some people feel really sluggish and lethargic, so that might be what's affecting your motivation? Maybe another AD will suit you better.

I had the appetite of a blue whale when I was on sertraline, the hunger was unreal. If food was looking at me I gobbled it up, putting on 3 stone in a year. I changed to fluoxetine and my appetite returned to normal, as did my energy levels. The excess weight is gone now and I don't have to deal with each day through a vale of brain fog.

I don't know much about the medication, OP, but speak to your GP, as others have said. I hope they would be able to offer an alternative.

But on the fitness, try to remember what you enjoyed about it and go from there. You need to make it fun. Is there a sport you like?

If the gym, set yourself some small, achievable goals. Restarting is the hardest part, but it will quickly become a habit again. And there's loads of evidence to suggest that physical exercise can really help your mental health too, so it might have some additional benefit too. Good luck!

I put over 3 stone on thanks to Mirtazapine. In all honesty, I would ask for something else. The minute I stopped it, the weight dropped off.

Obviously speak to your GP and wean yourself off gradually.

Fluoxetine is the only one mentioned that I've never been on. The thought of switching to yet another drug is kind of depressing, amd I'm worried that having had a pretty major "episode" in the recent past, making another change right now might be risky.

I know from experience that if I was exercising regularly and eating better I'll feel the benefits in many ways. I just SO hard to control my eating whilst constantly feeling so hungry! Honestly, I finish a meal and could eat it again twice over.

An unfortunate downside of quitting the rat race to de-stress is that we've also had to move to a much smaller house. I previously had the luxury of a garage with a rowing machine and space to work out. I really enjoyed it. But the rowing machine has had to go (no longer space for it), and I hate the idea of going to the gym - even if I had the time and money.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions!

A good diet would be the starting point. Get that sorted and energy will return naturally. A high protein diet is effective for weight loss not just muscle gain, it will also ensure what muscle you have will remain.

Happy to talk further if you’re interested pal.
