Piping hot lean beef stew....with carrots, leeks, garlic & onions with beef & chicken stock cubes & added oxtail soup at the end....acompanied with parsley creamy mashed potato I'd eat it right now

In my opinion depends if its made with lamb or beef.

Beef is cottage lamb is shepherd's "

Both should be made with scrag end of lamb, but shepherd's is sliced potato and cottage is made with mashed or creamed potato.

Personally I make both of mine with lean minced beef, sliced carrots and onions but I also add mushrooms to cottage pie or peas to shepherd's pie.
