In my opinion...

Technic: Yngwie Malmsteen (Massive talent and ego)

Melody and songwriting: Gary Moore

Uniqueness/Style: Mark Knopfler or David Gilmour.

I wanted to mention Richie Sambora(Interesting?), Buddy Guy(Guitar talking?) and Chris Rea(Nice strange?) as well, but unsure what category.

"Its probably a tie between a kid in a council house in Preston, Lancashire and this other kid in a trailer park somewhere in Idaho." Eric Clapton would often say to journalists who asked him the infamous best guitarist question.

"Not the one out of the Scorpions "

(2)

Uli Jon Roth is good, but probably not as good as Malmsteen.

He wasn't in the Scorpions too long anyway.

(1/3)Michael Schenker is nowhere to Uli.

Even his brother kicked him out of the band.

(3)

Matthias Jabs is good, but nothing exceptional. Well, he's using a lot of pinch harmonies and loves the tremolo bar.

I'm not biased at all.

I’ve seen a lot of these folks live, but the suggestions and the answers are somewhat subjective.

However, I’ll throw a list of 10 I personally believe are technically proficient & more importantly pioneers of influence or pushing technical boundaries.

this is only my opinion and in conversation I’m likely to chop and change based on strength of argument and wind direction.

BB King, Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix, Gary Moore, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Brian May, Lindsey Buckingham, Peter Green, David Gilmore, Carlos Santana

Keeping Fabbing you fabulous lot.

Satriani is high on my list, as are a lot of the shredders.

A lesser known guy is Jason Becker. He was playing stadia at the age of 17 or so for Dave Lee Roth but was then diagnosed with MND. He's still composing music despite not having any mobility. He communicates by moving his eyes.

Of course the question here is "Which guitarist's playing do you like the best?" as its music, not sport or competition.

But in the spirit of the post I always think Allan Holdsworth. Simply for the reason 99.97% of the supremely talented and successful guitarists named here as "best" are not technically gifted enough to play Holdsworth's parts he technique was so advanced of pretty much everyone.

Tim Henson from the band Polyphia. (Excellent band by the way)

Holy heck is Tim's style incredibly varied.

Incorporating a wide range of musical influences and techniques into his playing – including hybrid picking, tapping, harmonics, sweep picking, and jazzy chord progressions – to create a unique sound that is both technically impressive and emotionally rich.

I'm not qualified, but play a bit.

I categorized them and only one of them is my favorite.

I hate Rush, but I can say they are awesome musicians except the singer/bassist.

He's singing worse than Bob Dylan.

I like only a few Toto songs, but they are awesome musicians.

I like a few Journey songs, but they are awesome musicians.

I hate black/death metal, but the drummers are awesome.

I love Scorpions, but their Eye to eye album is absolutely disgusting.

I don't need to like something to have a good opinion.

I can have a bad opinion of one of my favorite artist's certain works.

Paper Town Central, Essex.

Bonamassa is a superb guitarist, however, a gentleman that passed away a few years ago received amazing praise from Bonamassa.

The guys name was Mike Caswell.

Mike jammed with Joe on something called lick library and at the end of the jam session said " with a guy like this, why the hell do you need me here?"

I also had the pleasure of jamming with Mike and Vic Wooton at a music shop in Romford during a promotional day.

I also play bass and it was one of the best days of my life.

Unfortunately Mike died young but when he played, he could virtually pick up any style.

His technique was superb.

He is sorely missed.

RIP Mike Caswell

Guthrie Govan is insanely talented (even if his music isn’t my cuppa). Steve Lukather is criminally underrated.

"SLASH

Overrated

Take away the cilinder, the cigarette and cut the hair off.

Give him a cheap guitar, then you have an average guitarist.

Same applies for the whole Guns N Roses.

Yes, but he turned up.

Also, after years of his Mickey Mouse performances he was singing well.

It kind of proved he can still sing, just didn't give a f*uck about the GNR fans.

Its very hard to pick the best guitarist, as they all have different techniques. I agree with all those mentioned so far as being contenders.

However, I'm going to say Dimebag Darrell ??

The problem with picking one, is that your own musical tastes get in the way and you would naturally side with some of the guitarist you listen too.

I'm drawn to metal guitarist, but I admit some of the usual suspects would easily make the grade too.

"Plus I like any Spanish guitarist "

And oldie but a goodie for you, Becs, is a little piece by an accomplished guitarist called Mason Williams.

Of course, it's Classical Gas.

I learned it when I was 17 for my dad. He loved the piece of music.

Although I never did it the justice it deserved, one of the best renditions of it was in a duet by

John Williams and Jose Feliciano.

Many people don't know the Metal guitarist by name from a band.

Obviously they are not as commercial as I mentioned for example.

My metal threads die faster than the " Favorite Muffin" or "How long do you wank?" thread.

Somewhere In The Ether…

From a technical viewpoint I’d likely cite Steve Vai.

However, musically, I really can’t stand his work which is comprised of essentially, wholly soulless tricking.

Musically, I’d go for Richie Blackmore.

Ritchie Blackmore has got to be the best guitarist imo. So many guitarists from today and even further back admire his work.

Brian May is a massive fan so that tells you something.

Just because he's not mainstream and has a reputation of being a bastard in the musical world can't take away what a true genius he actually is with an axe in his hand. You just have to Look through his back catalogue to see how many great songs he has been involved in.

These days though he stills tours and writes music with his wife Candice. A true legend of the guitar
