FabSwingers.com forum: Do you have lots of 'stuff' in your home ?

So i'm doing housework, a bit of laundry, the dishwasher is on and i'm dusting, generally tidying the living room and moving some bits and pieces around. I seem to have a lot of 'stuff', sentimental items given to me by family, some of my parents bits and pieces and now some of my in laws items. Sometimes i think i'd like to have less stuff on display for less cleaning, but then i feel sad because a lot of it has sentimental value.

How is your house ? Minimalist or lots of things around ?

I'm slowly clearing everything out since all mine either grew up and moved out or died.

My house needs to reflect who I am now. Plus I don't need 'shite' to help me to remember.

I filled an 8 yard skip with hoarded stuff the last time I moved. I've probably replaced a quarter of it already...

My house is stuffed with my trinkets, books and things, and all my wife's art stuff and books and little projects that I haven't had the emotional strength to move since she passed away. My daughter's stuff is everywhere too. We're a hugely maximalist house.

Yes we both have loads of 'stuff' we moved to a smaller property a while back and although we disposed of a lot of things we still have a lot. Books mostly some from our respective professions, loads from our various hobbies and interests. Then there's the equipment we need for our hobbies.

I was cleaning the windowsill in the kitchen earlier and thinking it would be much easier if it didn't have the various random objects on it but each item made me smile, so I put them back.

I'm a minimalist buried under whatever the opposite is

A friend of mine loves reading. He buys books. Many more than he can read. He sent me pics a month or so ago ....... His book shelves were filled moons ago ..... his books are in teetering piles around the main room ...... enough for a library .... more than he could ever read......

But if we venture off somewhere - he will buy some more

Ah yes, I can kind of identify with that. I'm much better now though and occasionally go through our bookshelves and pull out half a dozen that I either haven't read or have only read once. I read the first and third chapter and if it doesn't immediately grab my attention it goes into the charity bag. My Achilles heel used to be the for sale section in the library

My dad has kept quite a lot of my mum's stuff that he can't quite let go of yet. It's nothing to do with lack of emotional strength I don't think. I've told him it doesn't matter if he never gets rid of it

I have far too much stuff right now. I’ve even got a single bed on its side in my kitchen waiting for stuff to be moved so it can go in my living room. I normally love my stuff but right now it’s a bloody nightmare!!!

I don’t like clutter so I try to keep all the “stuff” to a minimum. Unfortunately I share my home with someone who likes lots of stuff, so I’m in a constant battle of finding the stuff, putting it away and more stuff appearing in its place

I'm glad i'm not the only one with lots of stuff

One think i don't have hanging around the house is novels, i'm an avid reader but most novels are on my Kindle. I do have paper books that are about history as i like to flick through them.

However i have hundreds of childrens books and i add to them frequently, i want my grandchildren to get the joy from books that i did when i was a child

I stopped the wife filling this house with shite. Even after 2 builders skips before we moved a big double garage is 2 thirds full of boxes. I'm going to sneak contents to charity shops and the tip. All her family are hoarders.

My parents were, and still are, massive hoarders and I've never really enjoyed being there.

My house is the place where "stuff" goes to retire...

My stuff.

My wife's stuff.

My dad's stuff.

My mum's stuff.

Some of the kids stuff that they never took away when they moved out 30 years ago.

Some of the stuff from the house of the aunt with dementia who had to go into care.

Some stuff that was here when we moved in (thankfully very little of that remaining now).

Still a few items that I think belonged to my wife's first husband.

Books (too many to count).

Magazines.

Comics (approx 40,000).

CDs and vinyl. Also some cassettes.

DVDs and video cassettes. A few Blu-ray's.

Antique furniture, ceramics, pictures, clocks.

Approx 70 carved elephants, various sizes.

Various pieces of furniture hand made by my father.

Computers and electronics equipment, components, tools.

A synthesizer (renovation in progress, started approx ten years ago).

This years calendars (four off). Last years calendars (five off).

A rice cooker inherited from an old friend who went home to India.

More stuff that I can't even remember at the moment...

We have masses, shamefully we stored a load of it in an entire room, as well as a walk in cupboard the length of another room. All of it personal important items we needed it all so much we havent unpacked it!

Keep threating to go through it all and give it to charity or sell it all.
