"We have recently got a new cat a week ago. She is 2 years old and doesn't like to use her litter tray to go number 2. Has anyone else had this problem and is there a way to solve it?" Was she an outside cat before you got her? She may not like the litter or the tray might not be big enough or in enough of a secluded place for her. Cats like to poop in fresh environments secretly not out in the open. Try moving the litter tray to the quietest part of the house and if it's not big enough for her, get a bigger one. Also experiment with different litter brands

"Have you tried 2 litter trays? Some cats don't like to piss where they shit. You should also use an enclosed litter tray to give them privacy and help them feel safe. However, if it's a rescue that had some trauma then you may be dealing with a dysfunctional cat and need a vets advice." Oh yeah the two litter tray thing too! She knows!

Try moving the litter tray around to places that are tucked away/private. Also get a feliway plug-in. Chances are, the cat is unsettled by the move. DO NOT tell the cat off! She'll just get more stressed out. You can also try making a fuss of her and/or giving her treats near (ish) to the litter tray area to let her know it's a safe space. It should settle down with some patience and reassurance if there were no issues prior to the move. Just a note though that it could be a sign of something wrong with her tummy. Might be worth a vet check up if there are any other symptoms of illness or if you've exhausted all other suggestions and there's no sign of improvement after a settling in period .

"My elderly cat has started doing this and it's because she has bowel problems and pain when pooping. So she's associated the tray with painful poops and will instead go literally anywhere else. Definitely get your kitty checked by a vet to be on the safe side. They will have lots of advice and a good practice will have a behaviour specialist you can speak to." Our elderly cat did this too. He had bad constipation
