If I’m being really honest I pay for it because at this stage in my life I can’t be arsed with the background stress I’d feel waiting for them to come knocking, even though I know the laws to defend myself.

Oh god no. I havn't watched television in like 15 years. Why would I pay £150 a year just for shitty repeats of the same show that have been aired for longer than I've been alive? Plus, I don't know any 18-25 year old that still watches television, it's such an old person thing to do!

Pay for it and always will. Don't watch that much, mainly their documentaries, but listen to lots of BBC radio and use their website every day. It's the only news source that is held to the highest standard of impartiality regardless of what some think (the left think its right and the right think its left, they can't both be right), can barely trust Sky due to its owner, definitely can't trust GB at all, so not much else left really.

Pay for it and delighted to do so. I don't watch much live TV but I use the iplayer, listen to football on the radio, and some of their other radio programmes. Also I love the fact that it produces programmes that I might not watch but I'm glad they exist - nature documentaries, public service-type programmes. Also Dr Who

Highest standard of impartiality you say!

Really!

Now hey, I’m not saying Sky nor GB or any other rag top print journalism is the bomb but describing the BBC as the highest standard is a stretch!

Cliff Richard and one or two others might give you a different opinion, try watching BBC World for an hour to see their impartiality at its finest

Oh and I’ve never paid for a TV license, never will.

If you don't pay for the TV licence you could go to jail and watch it for free.

All joking aside the BBC is advertising by the back door when they read football results they say the Joe blogs cup results or racing the betfred 2mile chase.

Can they not just say the result without the sponsorship name

They’ve been doing this for years!

If the BBC or the government actually cared about the fee then they’d encrypt the service; simple as!

But they don’t because research suggests it’d be bankrupt within the first year!

Have you informed the police of all the other crimes that you haven’t committed?

If they want to waste their money sending letter that’s their choice. There’s no legal obligation to respond to them.

Haven't had one for about 7 years as don't watch live TV or anything on iPlayer.

Had the usual letters from them saying we may conduct investigations etc etc which just go straight in the bin.

Thinking of a sending a letter in to remove their implied right of access as well.

For anyone who wants a lawyers view on it would suggest checking out Dan (BBB) on you tube, he's got a whole series of videos on them

But its not is it, it is literally held to the highest standard with the information that is available at the time and has independent bodies that scrutinise everything that goes out. Will one or 2 things be wrong now and then, yes of course, same as any news outlet. But compared to the bare faced lies spread on GB for example are laughable.

Cambridgshire.

There is a way around paying it.

Go to there website and declare the property in question is empty, the will email you back thanking you for the information and they will contact you again in 2 years to see if the situation has changed, no more letters/ visits for the next 2 years or so as you have been taken off the list of house to follow up with visits etc.

I have done this for many years and never had a problem.

You can thank me later

Someone said there’s no such thing as a dumb question, so here i go…

If you declare there’s nobody living there, yet you pay council tax etc. at the property and therefore have your info in the government database… can they not cross reference that information and see that you’re lying. Or, are the two completely independent (Council & TV License) and don’t have access to information from each other?

I could just be majorly paranoid lmao

the letters aren't legal as they do not have your name on them. We don’t, but then we only stream and don’t watch I-Player.

I suspect so many folk out there pay it for no reason.

If you’re not watching live TV (Sky, Virgin or Terrestrial) and you’re not watching I-Player you don’t need a license.

So we have Netflix, Amazon etc. and can watch 4OD or stuff on the ITV player and don’t need a license.

No they can't access the council tax information.

However, they say they do investigate a % of properties where no license is needed for whatever reason.

Theoretically they can then visit any property and if the find signs of habitation in a property that has been declared empty, they can use that as a basis of investigation.

Should they choose to persue it further they can, and sometimes do, get the police involved in order to obtain access to the property in order to continue their investigation.

If it's gotten that far then you're already on the back foot as they would already have proof of a fraudulent deceleration of the property being empty.

It's far simpler and easier to just say you don't require a TV license (if you don't) than make a knowingly false declaration and giving them any possible grounds for investigation or prosecution
