stupid question...ginger or red headed folk or celtic folk lived in britain long before the saxons or normans arrived...this lack of respect shown to these people is a residual attitude shown by conqueres to indiginous people...and given the gentic mix of most people today its not uncommon to have a resessive red gene which may show up in any off spring at any time..but to prattle on about red heads in a offensive manner is unhelpful as any of your children or grandchidren can born a redhead..

It certainly is the last thing that most of society deems is acceptable to make jokes about yes.

And I had it used as a term of abuse right the way through childhood/teens and even into adulthood.

Having someone in a pub say "I'm gonna fucking kill you, you ginger cunt" as he swings a fist at you is one incident I remember vividly. Particularly as it was preceded by him proclaiming loudly that women don't like ginger people as they stink of piss and have velcro pubes.

He then took offense when I said his mother didn't seem to complain while I kicked her back doors in.

Now re read it with one word changed, "I'm gonna fucking kill you, you P**i cunt" and all of a sudden that man would be arrested for racially aggravated assault. While being a redhead isn't a race it's still very much a minority.

So I think that the word Ginger should be like the N word. Only Gingers should be allowed to use it.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with rusty, carrot topped, tangoed folk!

It's not contagious, they don't leave orange marks on your pillows and if you're lucky enough to get a meet with them and you haven't swapped face pics - they tend to be easier to spot in Starbucks!!

I actually have a bit of a thing for ginger or red haired ladies, I really do love it.

I have a mate who has ginger hair and he gets the odd joke about it from us (just as he jokes about me being short, beardy or just about anything else for a cheap laugh) - I tell you what though, he's never short of ladies after him.

As a teenager I had bright ginger hair, kinda bad news for a boy but still, a local older bully boy used to take the p usual thing copper top, duracell etc, people called him a twat.

I.m now brown/grey, but still have hair yeah, but no longer get called duracell, (which is a shame cause it would mean something different now) but hes still a twat

That is correct, I don't. I merely based my response on your use of the word 'relentless', which suggests, by definition, that the abuse was unrelenting, thus going on for a considerable time, if not ongoing.

Threads about gingers, fatties, skinnies, blondes, tall people, short people etc, happen all the time on these forums, so if you think you are not going to like what you see on a particular thread, perhaps best you don't _iew it. I say this not as a 'snide remark', but as advice, for if you cannot accept others opinions or jokes on matters without getting irate due to personal similarities, then you may not always like what you read and may get upset at further similar posts which are inevitable on an open forum.

Anyway, we both SINCERELY wish you and your family peace and contentment without prejudice or malice.

I have a sense of humour and some of the ginger jokes on this thread I found funny , such as Wishys Harry potter joke. I thought the original post was ludicrous as taking the piss out of gingers is not racist and it is laughable to think it is. I just thought that everyone was ganging up on the OP and that your remarks were a little OTT. I felt somewhat justified in these thoughts when I read your now deleted post. I'm sure the OP can fight their own battles though and maybe I got a little hot headed, it's a trait with gingers don't you know. I must read posts differently to most others.. I know what was typed in the OP, but I just took it that he was asking why it is not OK to take the piss out of race, but it is OK to take the piss out of Gingers! I know that other hair colours are also the butt of jokes, but there are some pretty nasty things said about people with ginger hair.

At school, you never heard "Fuck off you blond cunt". "You stupid brown haired minger" But it is OK to shout "Fuck off you ginger twat"! While it may not be actual racism, it is akin to racism in that it is a minority who are ridiculed by something they shouldn’t have to change!

However, the majority of jokes are about someone. There is usually always a person, race, creed or culture that bears the brunt of the joke. Whether it is played out through animals or green men from space, that joke has its origins in prejudice of some kind. So what do we do? Carry on regardless! A world without jokes would be a sad place indeed, perhaps those who take offence at something that is not aimed at them should get a thicker skin! (And it kinda gives lie to the “I never label/judge people and then they take on a label to show indignation!)

I agree - it's only a joke if the other person finds it funny too. Although I'll accept there are plenty who *think* they are joking, but are ignorant to the hurt they cause - but that only makes them marginally less repulsive than those who set out to be hurtful.

So, taking the piss out of a different race is OK? Lets see you do that in front of a member of our police service! Your definition, or the one you seem to be using in this thread, is the one where everyone is having a jolly jape. That is NOT what I am talking about.

Ask any kid at school who is bullied what others are doing to them. They will say they are taking the piss!! Taking the piss is making others feel inferior and whether it is a personal attack or an attack on a whole race, someone is getting hurt! Or are you saying there is a bigger hurt to a race because there are more people?

I was taken the piss out of at school and it was very hurtful indeed! I had no "Race" to offset the hurt onto, I couldn't say "Well, they don't mean me, they are talking generally". It was me! Only me! OK, I learnt to cope after discovering in my rage one day that bullies only bully the weak. One hefty punch out in frustration and it was fixed. Not everyone has that in them.

However, if it is OK to make jokes about Gingers, the lanky, the sticky out ears and so on, then why is it not OK to make jokes about others? As it happens, I have learnt that it is just a joke, not a slight on any one person. Most of all it is funny! I have heard the same joke used with different characters and it still works. And if you really don’t believe other races make jokes about us? Wake up and smell the coffee…

Is it not true for all jokes that there has to be somebody who laughs at the expense of another?

Now if the one at whose expense the joke is... find it funny, genuinely funny...then that is ok. I do wonder sometimes though whether people feel oblliged to join in as they have really no choice in the matter. If they dont laugh they either get teased and moqued more... or are being described as not having a sense of humour.

Dont get me wrong - I LOVE a giggle, banter, laughter and I dont mind when (some) jokes are at my expense - there are other "jokes" I dont find funny and I tell people that I get tired of them. They tend to be samey and boring jokes anyway.

My line is... if in doubt check it out (subtley) if the jokee is ok about being joked about. In terms of red heads - I cannot understand why they are being made fun of so much... there are some very attractive red heads, both male and female!

Or are you having a conversation with somebody else but mistakenly quoting me?

Because nothing you have said makes any sense at all in relation to the points I made.

I regularly take the piss out of coppers - especially ginger ones - nothing more ironic than a ginger copper

I think you have to place the relative prejudices in some historical context.

I cant recall anyone having been denied a job because of their hair colour or made to sit at the back of a bus..I'm now trying to think of exceptions!

it does happen I'm afraid, what the OP question is , is that is it racist which it isnt..

the current media is pretty much to blame..even moreso from the english..unfortunately I believe its spread to scotland now and people have become ashamed of being born ginger(its cool to dye ur hair ginger if u arent tho lol)

like has been said before..there are extremes on how ppl use this derogating humour..and I'd find it hard how u could explain to a child why it would be acceptable than racial based comments/jokes..

..you sit wee Morag down and tell her straight that unless she dyes her hair she's gonna have a pretty shit life and people will rip the piss out of her until she learns how to crush gonads with one kick. I know what was typed in the OP, but I just took it that he was asking why it is not OK to take the piss out of race, but it is OK to take the piss out of Gingers! I know that other hair colours are also the butt of jokes, but there are some pretty nasty things said about people with ginger hair.

At school, you never heard "Fuck off you blond cunt". "You stupid brown haired minger" But it is OK to shout "Fuck off you ginger twat"! While it may not be actual racism, it is akin to racism in that it is a minority who are ridiculed by something they shouldn’t have to change!

However, the majority of jokes are about someone. There is usually always a person, race, creed or culture that bears the brunt of the joke. Whether it is played out through animals or green men from space, that joke has its origins in prejudice of some kind. So what do we do? Carry on regardless! A world without jokes would be a sad place indeed, perhaps those who take offence at something that is not aimed at them should get a thicker skin! (And it kinda gives lie to the “I never label/judge people and then they take on a label to show indignation!)

By the way, Naughty Kitty.. Welcome back to posting hunny, missed you on here although still had the pleasure elsewhere. Give your Ginger a hug from us xxx
