" you don't need to eat healthy or exercise because you're slim". I hear this statement quite often and I find it rather worrying that people don't connect healthy eating and exercise to maintaining a preferred size.

Sorry, but unless you watch their food intake 24/7 people lie about what they eat and how much of it.

An alcoholic, a smoker, a drug user etc. can lie about how much they use and it won't be physically obvious for years that they are lying, not so for peoples weight!

You really, really can't get more energy(calorific value) out than you put in and the "genetic disorder/high or low metabolism" excuse is just that, an excuse in most cases stemming from urban myths.

I do know what I'm talking about but you just took offense to a statement for your own personal reasons, factual truth obtained through scientific observation being denied is usually the stomping ground of organised religion but if it makes you feel better about yourself use it for anything that makes you happy.

I used the term "preferred size", I wasn't trolling and I didn't use the term "wobbly" or anything derogatory. The choice is everyone's to be free to look however they feel but there are very few people in the world who "have" to be fat.

If you want to lose weight you have to change your diet and you have to exercise more. There is no way around it. Slow metabolism is not to blame. Your individual metabolismn is what it is, high, medium or low, and you have to learn to live with it.

If you are really feeling slothful, go for a checkup - you could be one of very few who do have a physical cause for slow metabolism requiring medication.

almost everyone excercises. if we live breath and move we are excercising. Some of us may be more active in our lives than others, depends on job, environment, interests etc. Movement of our bodies burns calories that we have consumed.

Some of us may choose to do regular routines to improve overall muscle tone and reduce fat.

Look what can happen to retired athletes. This is muscle turning to fat not just eating.

Thing is we choose.

There is no obligation to be slim.

I (Silk) get the same thing said about me when I tell people I'm cutting out the junk food and going to the gym to strip away the fat in my body.

I personally feel that just because I'm a certain build does not mean I should take in the junk just to please other people.

But at the same time everyone is free to live their life the way they choose.

Diet is an important part of staying fit and healthy. Exercise does not mean a thing if you're eating/drinking the wrong foods.

Just wanted to raise a point about metabolism that many people seem to miss when using it as an excuse. Metabolism, although to a degree determined by genetics and age, can be strongly affected by diet and exercise. If you build up more muscle for example, you will improve your metabolism. A good breakfast can help. As can eating regular small portions of food throughout the day as opposed to just a couple of large meals.

The time of day that people eat can have a large affect on their weight too. Its best to eat more early in the day, and not much at night when you will have less time to burn off the energy before bed.

Yes and your met is improved cos if you have more muscle you are more active and therefore you burn more calories through activity. You need to work with your metabolism.

Being a bit overweight isn't necessarily unhealthy, in fact there's some evidence to suggest being a bit overweight can help people to live longer.

Other than people who are morbidly obese or with truly terrible diets, the real killer is lack of exercise; whether they're overweight or slim.

Exercise is actually a pretty poor way of losing weight, diet is much more effective, but exercise is vital for health whether you're overweight or slim.

Fortunately, sex can be very good exercise

Its 60% and 40% gym in your terms but to a pro bodybuilder its 100% effort on diet and 100% in the gym.

I'm 6 foot five/six and like a racing snake, I eat kebabs and stuff, I drink beers and smoke sometimes..... I truly think that metabolism has a huge impact, the folks that are saying diet is everything and the others who say exercise is the be all and end all...... It's moderation, some people where simply made to be bigger or smart than others. If you make sure you eat a decent amount of good food and stay reasonably active, your body will find its prime size/shape. If you want to bigger or smaller than size then that's completely up to you, remember, as much as folks say oh I'm happy with my size and all that jazz, you'll always find there is something somewhere on everyone they would like to change, even if only a very small thing. So, in short..... Moderate your junk intake, eat a bit of green from time to time and rather than take the car to the shops, have a little wander. Happy days

Yes it does, my genetic make up and size was predetermined, so is my metabolism.

My metabolism will slow down as I age, as with everyone else, however as I was born with a high metabolism I could sit here all day everyday stuffing my face full of crap.

Would my size then be dictated by the amount of chocolate bars and cakes I had eaten, no, my metabolism remains the same and I will not put weight on.

For someone with a low metabolism their metabolism will dictate their size should they choose to stuff their face.

I choose not to eat junk food, I don't like it, however that makes no difference to my genetic makeup or metabolism and even if I changed my eating habits today I would remain the same size.

I think the concern about looks is basically, nobody wants to offer a meet to you if you live under a bridge shouting at goats!!

And as for health, if you are offered a meet, people want to be assured you can stay the distance, I suppose in the realms of fab, it's a justified curiosity/concern, if a bit of a selfish one!!! Heh heh

she was always going on about fat women saying they were greedy and lazy, especialy if they were much younger than her.

if they werent fat she would still bitch about them anyway.

most of the time she did it to make herself feel better, thats what people do, especialy women.

Logically people have a right to be concerned about anything that leads to expensive and avoidable costs for NHS medical care caused by lifestyle choices.

Big picture is we are lucky enough to live as part of the privileged small minority of the worlds 6 billion + people that have the choice to be overweight as opposed to having enough to eat to stay alive.

Oh and I don't judge people for the way they look, people shouldn't be criticized for being themselves especially if they are happy. In the same way as if I had chosen to write a thread on health effects of smoking, no more would I talk badly about smokers than I would obesity. This thread is not about targeting people or making them feel unhappy it is about expressing the fact that exercise and healthy eating isn't necessarily about trying to lose weight but to maintain a desired fitness and shape. The reason why I originally started this post was because during my school run this morning I was told by a larger lady that I was lucky after two kids that I didn't have to bother putting any effort in because I am slim and very unaware that the reason why I am is because of my diet and training( before this I was not slim).

I know that and it's my point, it's a choice, we expect "refusal of treatment policy" because we smoke and accept that it's not unfair on us! We will give up if we decide to or need to.

Being concerned about another person's looks is not important unless it is for a job interview or an event of some importance.

Being concerned about ones health is a different story as most of us have family members/friends who sometimes have avoidable illnesses due to poor lifestyle choices or not enough exercise.

Given up preaching on living a healthy lifestyle. People who know me well know how I live my life and treat my body.

If what I do rubs off on them then all good, if not then oh well, life carries on.

I'm not content with what I've got so I go out of my way to change it by staying fit and healthy. Take takes a lot effort for me.

I think the point of this thread was to say exactly that, just because your slim doesnt mean you dont or wont have health problems. If you're eating foods high in saturated fat, such as butter, cheese, cakes and biscuits, chocolates, sweets burgers, fried food, takeaways, etc etc it's nearly all stored as visceral fat.

That's the fat we can't see that surrounds vital organs, called visceral fat, that could be a hidden killer.

(Visceral fat is metabolized by the liver, which transforms it into cholesterol.

Cholesterol circulates in the blood and can collect in your arteries, creating heart disease and high blood pressure).

While people who eat foods like this regularly and don't put on weight are often deemed "lucky'', it can be dangerous to NOT have an external regulator that shows you're gaining fat,

I was not bragging, merely pointing out fact.

I do not eat junk food, I cook religiously every day a home cooked meal, I know exactly what goes into my body.

"I'm noticing more and more of these threads, is there something going on here? Like some kind of personal attack? Or is it just coincidence that on a weekly basis we have threads that are inciting trouble for te self conscious, either way beauty has no constraints on dress size, personality & confidence are far superior qualities than having a skinny waist xx

I think you are missing the point of this thread i never read it as someone attacking anyone for their size. I saw it as someone promoting a healthy lifestyle and that just because your slim doesnt mean you shouldnt look after your health or be criticised for doing so.

"firstly I don't want anyone to think I am judging anybody about their size, big slim or what ever it is! Most of these posts are about bigger people being fat or unhealthy or however you want to think about it.

But for all the slim people saying or bragging about all the junk they can eat and they stay the same size, I ask you this question... how do you know you have not got large fat deposits which can effect your health just like a larger person ?

MrD

I was not bragging, merely pointing out fact.

I do not eat junk food, I cook religiously every day a home cooked meal, I know exactly what goes into my body.

Oh & my blood pressure always remains the same and I know I haven't got any fat deposits as they present as lipomas, and I have none of those."

Hi I mentioned the ones that were bragging and not any individual person.

Lipomas are awful to have or keep getting and I know a few people who are sufferers with the ones under the skin, and there are a few different forms internally.

As a indication of gaining Visceral Fat I am not sure on that one.

Something I have never thought about and am going to research that later, sounds a very interesting angle.

If you know of any scientific studies I would be greatfull if you could pm me a link.

MrD

"If you're eating foods high in saturated fat, such as butter, cheese, cakes and biscuits, chocolates, sweets burgers, fried food, takeaways, etc etc it's nearly all stored as visceral fat.

Low metabolism is very different than a metabolic disorder such as hypothyroidism.

The main cause of a low metabolism is inactivity which causes your muscle mass to shrink and because muscles cells burn more calories the less of them you have the more your metabolism slows down.

Dieting also causes the metabolism to slow down over a period of time as the body's natural survival mechanisms cut in when food is restricted.

Age also causes cells to burn less energy and lowers the metabolic rate.

"Ive still not had my question about why people are so concerned about other peoples looks/health ect

"

Well I am not Judgmental About anybody as I said before. But for me it is something that fascinates me and It is something I have to know with my job.

But I would never start a thread about it.

Not unless the diet is geared to increase metabolism, only a bad put together diet will lower the metabolic rate, muscle tissue does not need to be affected everyone's metabolic rate can be increased.

Unless its is a medical problem and drugs for the thyroid can be prescribed such as Thyroxin

"What i find worrying is people worrying about other people and their lives.

If yuor happy and content why worry about other people"

Because it gives them a sense of looking down on others....they need to feed this habit far more than an overweight person needs to feed themselves with food.

To be more specific I should have said "dieting to lose weight".

Funny enough I wasn't the one laughing at the "wobbling all over the place" comment, I thought it was offensive.
