"Sorry, but unless you watch their food intake 24/7 people lie about what they eat and how much of it. An alcoholic, a smoker, a drug user etc. can lie about how much they use and it won't be physically obvious for years that they are lying, not so for peoples weight! You really, really can't get more energy(calorific value) out than you put in and the "genetic disorder/high or low metabolism" excuse is just that, an excuse in most cases stemming from urban myths." No, metabolism is not a myth, and that does affect someone's size.

Im guessing that your obviuosly not that confident otherwise you wouldnt make such a thread, however that is just my opinion

I know I am big but I am more worried and concerned about other things in my life.. I can still get laid I can attract men in relationships.. "" you don't need to eat healthy or exercise because you're slim". I hear this statement quite often and I find it rather worrying that people don't connect healthy eating and exercise to maintaining a preferred size. " I (Silk) get the same thing said about me when I tell people I'm cutting out the junk food and going to the gym to strip away the fat in my body. I personally feel that just because I'm a certain build does not mean I should take in the junk just to please other people. But at the same time everyone is free to live their life the way they choose. Diet is an important part of staying fit and healthy. Exercise does not mean a thing if you're eating/drinking the wrong foods.

"Just wanted to raise a point about metabolism that many people seem to miss when using it as an excuse. Metabolism, although to a degree determined by genetics and age, can be strongly affected by diet and exercise. If you build up more muscle for example, you will improve your metabolism. A good breakfast can help. As can eating regular small portions of food throughout the day as opposed to just a couple of large meals. The time of day that people eat can have a large affect on their weight too. Its best to eat more early in the day, and not much at night when you will have less time to burn off the energy before bed." Yes and your met is improved cos if you have more muscle you are more active and therefore you burn more calories through activity. You need to work with your metabolism.

"All valid posts. Diet plays a massive part in fitness. For body builders and people trying to develop these muscles its 60% diet 40% gym. " Its 60% and 40% gym in your terms but to a pro bodybuilder its 100% effort on diet and 100% in the gym.

Yes it does, my genetic make up and size was predetermined, so is my metabolism. My metabolism will slow down as I age, as with everyone else, however as I was born with a high metabolism I could sit here all day everyday stuffing my face full of crap. Would my size then be dictated by the amount of chocolate bars and cakes I had eaten, no, my metabolism remains the same and I will not put weight on. For someone with a low metabolism their metabolism will dictate their size should they choose to stuff their face. I choose not to eat junk food, I don't like it, however that makes no difference to my genetic makeup or metabolism and even if I changed my eating habits today I would remain the same size.

"Ive still not had my question about why people are so concerned about other peoples looks/health ect " my much older sister has always been quite slim, she still wasnt a very confident person though. she was always going on about fat women saying they were greedy and lazy, especialy if they were much younger than her. if they werent fat she would still bitch about them anyway. most of the time she did it to make herself feel better, thats what people do, especialy women.

"Ive still not had my question about why people are so concerned about other peoples looks/health ect " Logically people have a right to be concerned about anything that leads to expensive and avoidable costs for NHS medical care caused by lifestyle choices. Big picture is we are lucky enough to live as part of the privileged small minority of the worlds 6 billion + people that have the choice to be overweight as opposed to having enough to eat to stay alive.

" I know that and it's my point, it's a choice, we expect "refusal of treatment policy" because we smoke and accept that it's not unfair on us! We will give up if we decide to or need to. You have tried to counter my argument by pointing out something about us as individuals when I have been talking about the population in general and averages.

"Ive still not had my question about why people are so concerned about other peoples looks/health ect " Being concerned about another person's looks is not important unless it is for a job interview or an event of some importance. Being concerned about ones health is a different story as most of us have family members/friends who sometimes have avoidable illnesses due to poor lifestyle choices or not enough exercise. Given up preaching on living a healthy lifestyle. People who know me well know how I live my life and treat my body. If what I do rubs off on them then all good, if not then oh well, life carries on. I'm not content with what I've got so I go out of my way to change it by staying fit and healthy. Take takes a lot effort for me. Silk

"If you're eating foods high in saturated fat, such as butter, cheese, cakes and biscuits, chocolates, sweets burgers, fried food, takeaways, etc etc it's nearly all stored as visceral fat. That's the fat we can't see that surrounds vital organs, called visceral fat, that could be a hidden killer. (Visceral fat is metabolized by the liver, which transforms it into cholesterol. Cholesterol circulates in the blood and can collect in your arteries, creating heart disease and high blood pressure). While people who eat foods like this regularly and don't put on weight are often deemed "lucky'', it can be dangerous to NOT have an external regulator that shows you're gaining fat,"

Hi I mentioned the ones that were bragging and not any individual person. Lipomas are awful to have or keep getting and I know a few people who are sufferers with the ones under the skin, and there are a few different forms internally. As a indication of gaining Visceral Fat I am not sure on that one. Something I have never thought about and am going to research that later, sounds a very interesting angle. If you know of any scientific studies I would be greatfull if you could pm me a link. MrD

The main cause of a low metabolism is inactivity which causes your muscle mass to shrink and because muscles cells burn more calories the less of them you have the more your metabolism slows down. Dieting also causes the metabolism to slow down over a period of time as the body's natural survival mechanisms cut in when food is restricted. Age also causes cells to burn less energy and lowers the metabolic rate.
