we all like to look our best! I use several free pacakages to varying effect, wha do people recommend and which are worth buying?

Depends...

If it's just phone photos you're probably best off with phone apps.

There's plenty of good editing software for computers that's free (Gimp and websites like Photopea).

PhotoShop is great but probably not worth for occasional use.

Dunno about AI tools tbh, but I'm sure someone will know.

I would recommend concentrating on lighting, framing and your background. If you get those right you won't need to edit... Time +patience are the key

Plenty of presets or you can go into the tools and do your own thing, or mix and match as you like

Snapseed is a favourite of mine, its a free app for use on phone or tablet.. easy to use but also lots of vid on you-tube to enhance further..

I use CaptureOne for all editing in raw, and you can still buy it as a standalone package instead of cloud subscription. If it’s a professional shoot and some retouching is required, then a 16bit 300dpi tif into photoshop is a secondary editing stage, but I only do this if I’m getting paid for it. If I’ve shot something with a phone (which isn’t often), I just use the basic editing tools in the phone.

Judging by a lot of photos that end up in top pics, unless you know how to professionally edit pics using the smudge tool to make things bigger/smaller, don’t bother. It’s painful obviously when stuff in the background is messed up

As for filters, you can’t filter your way out of a bad pic. Good lighting + good cameras gonna do a lot better then trying to patch up low effort with filters

They know what catches the eye because women take a lot of photos of themselves.

Affinity Photo 2 is similar in features to Photoshop for a one of payment rather than a subscription model.
