"Yes but as I'm currently eating anchovies for lunch, be a bit strange if I didn't " Mackerel fillets in spicy tomato sauce here, so not a particularly strong smell. I've also got a diminishing stock of the ones in mustard sauce which I keep for more special occasions!

"As someone reminded me, and my brain really should have gone here as well, if its unexpect this can be a symptom of electrical cables overheating including the ones embedded in the walls. I have been in holiday rent where that actually happened. The had plugged in an additional electric heater and it was overloading the ring main and smoldering in the wall. The smell got very strong pretty quickly. Thankfully I had experineced this in my R&D work so knew to cut the power to the circuit and get it dealt with." At one time it was fairly common for the white plastic used in the manufacture of electrical fittings such as ceiling roses and 13Amp outlets to contain surplus milk powder as a filler. All would be well until things got hot, particularly light bulbs, and an awful smell would develop which would never go away. Replacing the fitting with something newer was the only remedy.
