Where you thought you'd be in life?

I've watched the Robbie Williams documentary, he was my Ryan before Ryan was my Ryan.

It just reminds me of how I was back then, what I thought my life would be. How different it actually is, how different I am.

Are you where you're meant to be?

Where you'd hoped to be?

* I seem to have a thing for guys whose name begins with R...

I took a few fruitless wrong turns in my 20s and 30s. Mainly because I'm was trying to please societal norms and live up to other people's expectations.

Now I'm doing what i want. I'm happy. Not where I thought I'd be and I'm ok with that.

I never really planned where I’d be, so never really had a plan,

My only real sub conscious plan was to get past 47 as that was the age my old man died.

I’ve passed that so now I’m just planning on watching my daughter grow into a beautiful adult.

Where did you hope to be? And how as it differed if that’s ok to ask?

Nope. Never thought I'd be so reliant on other people, so incapable of doing things I want to do, so pathetically vulnerable in the eyes of others.

I was going to be James Herriot, yomping over hills and dales to save the lives of cows and horses, come rain or shine. I am not doing that. I'd be incapable of doing that now anyway.

Deserving is a strong word.

I hoped the bus would be on time earlier and it wasn't... that doesn't mean I was undeserving of getting to work on time.

You're hopes are based on things that you can't really control; you can nudge things in the right direction as best you can and you have agency over your plans and how you act upon them...

But life is what happens to you when you're busy making plans

Fate has it's own plan.

I think it's more about expectations than being undeserving, but I guess it's up to us all to decide that individually.

Fate suggests that everything is preordained. That there's no free will or randomness. Which I think is, politely, total bollocks.

Sure, I get that. But there will be some people's hopes who have not been met by sheer circumstances out of their control.

I'm sure most "make the best of it" but they might not be "where they're supposed to be either". I think the 'supposed' jarred with me.

But as Lib said, I guess we read into that what we want to. I absolutely agree we all need to deal with the cards we're dealt as best we can.

Reminds me of that famous apocryphal story about the French actress (a different one depending on who tells it) who, when asked what the most important thing to have in life was, responded 'A penis.' Cue confused dinner guests until someone realised she'd actually said 'Happiness'.

Professionally, I knew exactly where I wanted to be. It is rarefied and exulted position that less than 1% ever make it to. I was off to a brilliant start, but my chances were wilfully and deliberately destroyed by someone. I spent a long time reeling from that, and a longer time trying to work my way back. I might still make it. Time will tell. Everything else, where I am now is better than I thought it would be x

No, I am not where I had hoped I would be... not for lack of achievement alone.

Whilst on course I have had some setbacks like most of us but things seemed to square up again in equally unexpected strokes of good fortune as the setbacks.

The thing being the world has evolved so much faster than I could ever have imagined and where I wanted to be simply doesn't exist anymore... it has been overtaken by the crazy pace of life..

No, absolutely not.

I was but then I had children and a lot went tits up because of health, childcare costs etc.

To be honest though I'm not sure now a few years later that it matters all that much.

I have a great little family a roof over my head, food in the cupboards and a successful small business, it may not be what I'd planned or hoped for or even worked towards but it works & I'm greatful.

Oh mate, don't ask that question

But, no. I don't think I am. Growing up I thought I'd do the traditional "go uni, get a job, get married, have kids, live happily ever after" before I turn 30. It really doesn't look like that's going to happen as I never went to uni and although I haven't given up hope of finding a long term partner, the thought of marriage and kids is very much up in the air.
