It's Bram Stokers birthday, and as I'm sure you're all aware he gave the world the character of Count Dracula, THE original vampire.

So, who thinks the whole vampire thing is a turn-on, and why?

(And when I say Vampire, I'm not referring to the De Haviland Vampire jet fighter, sexy though it was)

Somewhere In The Ether…

The notion of vampires is an absolutely fascinating one as very much is the folklore attached to these preternatural beings.

I’m particularly a fan of the written works of

Montague Summers on the subject

The immortal angst. The peril to your very soul. The candles. The decor. The clothes!

OMG, what's not to like?

….oh, sorry almost forgot: On the big screen and in much modern literature, vampires are indeed very often incredibly sexy beings.

In folklore, most definitely not so.

I'm caveating my reply with... if you fancy me or find me attractive please don't read this. Honestly, it's for the best you don't. Just find a thread where I talk about blowjobs or something.

****

Now that's out of the way, Dracula isn't the original vampire. I mean sure, he's the one people think of first but that's only down to the popularity of Bram Stoker's depiction. What about Camille? The upir? Jure Gonde? Polidori's homage to Byron?

I do think vampires can be sexy (coming from a woman who loves horror films and masks this will be of little surprise).

I went into great detail about this with a fora user recently; the zeitgeist being reflected in the depiction, the changing nature/appearance of them. It's only really in the Victorian era that vampires became sexy. A relief offered against the rather repressed societal norms. Vampires were once these rather awful bloated reincarnated corpses; having your life drained by one of those isn't quite as arousing is it?

I like that juxtaposition between the feral, primal nature and the cold smoothness, class of the facade. That composure contrasting with the inner turmoil of having a lust, a need for something. It lends itself well to my love of having people break their calmness, the way someone's eyes darken when they're wanting me.

I like desire when it's... intoxicating.

Much like blood lust is for a vampire.

Also the tales of vampires through history are very likely due to people infected with rabies. Much less sexy when you think of it that way.

Moving away from the (historically accurate) bloated, TB & rabies ridden, corpses…

The whole notion of vampires being sexy is basically - Power. The power to hypn0tise, transform, fight very death itself. To command dark armies or bug eating Renfields. To consume.. both metaphorically or literally.

Or it’s the blood -

Or to quote the greatest vampire of all time

“Blood is life, lackbrain. Why do you think we eat it? It's what keeps you going, makes you warm, makes you hard, makes you other than dead. 'Course it's her blood.”

The modern idea of vampires is sexy - with the whole biting and being kinda dominant.

Not so much into the bloated corpse idea

There’s quite a lot of love for the fanged ones on here, which is interesting.

For me, one of the most compulsive attractions of the various depictions of vampires is the compulsion…the irresistible desire that one engenders in another to surrender to an irresistible power. And of course the forbidden, taboo nature of that surrender, of that use.

I think my own personal favourite vampire film is Tony Scott’s 1983 picture ‘The Hunger’ with Catherine Deneuve, Susan Sarandon and…David Bowie.

Deneuve’s vampire, an ancient creature but beautiful, irresistibly sexual, unknowable and exquisitely aloof, is utterly compelling.
