"Will no longer legally ne able to buy cigarettes in the uk EVER. Personally I thinks it's good but at the same time I think it's stripping people of their freedom. What do we think?" I think they should include vapes in this. They're far more appealing to kids

"I saw this but can anyone clarify how that is? It's 18 to smoke and if they plan on increasing that every year, wouldn't it be the 17 year old now that could never buy them? Or is it by the time they bring that law in, those born in 2009 will be 17?" Essentially anyone born after Jan 1 2009 can never legally smoke (pretty much). So those that are 18 once in place with the an will be the last generation to smoke, the minimum age raises with them. "Proposed new legislation will make it an offence for anyone born on or after 1 January 2009 to be sold tobacco products – effectively raising the smoking age by a year each year until it applies to the whole population. This has the potential to phase out smoking in young people almost completely as early as 2040." As each generation dies off the less people smoking. So the ban is based on a year not age.

"It’s stripping people of their rights. Can’t ban one thing and not the others. I’m a non smoker but if people want to smoke to relieve the stresses of life so be it. Why don’t we take away alcohol or caffeine the list can go on and on. Never mind the tax smoking generates this will come up a short fall again putting taxes on other things. They can’t even stop classed drugs so how are they going to police it more wasted time and effort. " In a way you are correct. But smoking isn't a stress relief unless you are addicted to it. It is getting that fix of nicotine which is calming, the habit and and feeling associated with the nicotine. For somebody that has never smoked, it won't be a stress relief. What you won't have had, you won miss. People/adults will still buy them for those under the ban year limit. We will still have smoking addicts, and this will cause shady dealings for cigarettes in years to come. Won't be able to buy them legally but we will have smokers regardless, of all ages.

"Perhaps more people will just grow at home " It's not easy in northern Europe but we have done it. At the moment we are exploiting a loophole in the German tax system. Whole leaf tobacco doesn't attract tobacco tax in Germany and you can buy it legally on Ebay for around 16€ a kilo. We have a shredder and have become quite good at blending, and in Germany and Spain filter tubes are readily available for pennies. The government will probably wise up one day and close it. But for now it's make hay (or ciggies) while the sun shines.

"Different rules for adults on the basis of age is discrimination." It’s no different than the age for an HGV license is older than a car license, don’t see anyone jumping up and down saying that’s discriminatory

"Different rules for adults on the basis of age is discrimination. Also it's stupid. My mate's older sister bought them for us when we were 12. Same thing will happen in 2069 but a 60 year old will be getting their dodgy Dorris who was born in 2008 to buy the fags. She'll probably run a black market trade in them as she has no pension. Dorris tax on your cigs only £10000.00 a pack!"

" It ignores people's right to decide for themselves. Puts in place prohibition, which we know doesn't work - creating organised crime and reducing tax revenue. Tax revenue from tobacco sales is huge, it's more than the cost to treat related illnesses - that's ignoring lawful job creation and the welfare savings from reduced life expectancy. The only ethical argument was secondary smoke. Reasonable argument: the issue has been dealt with. Smokers now can't smoke around other people.

"Prohibition doesn't work.. if theres a demand money to be made criminals will supply that need Education is far better" I think tobacco is different because I don’t think kids will be buying expensive, poor quality black market tobacco so they can…. Do what exactly? It’s not like you party or have a good time on tobacco. What’s the incentive to buy black market tobacco

"Will no longer legally ne able to buy cigarettes in the uk EVER. Personally I thinks it's good but at the same time I think it's stripping people of their freedom. What do we think?" You could say that any law is stripping people of their freedom. Personally I think selling someone a toxic substance and causing a lifelong physical addiction is stripping someone of their freedom.

"This will reduce cigarette use, but not end it. Prohibition doesn't work, but, the ban on smoking started 26 years ago with enclosed public spaces and expanded over time. It has become more socially unacceptable. Very few people will bother with black market cigarettes because the margin is too low for sellers in a vastly smaller market. " you'd be very surprised how much can be made even in today's environment I no people earning thousands a month tax free more than local Dr g dealer
