So if I show support for a left wing associated cause I’m virtue signalling, but having a permanent poppy or help for heroes isn’t? Is it basically only virtue signalling if the right wing press disagrees with it? Discuss

“the public expression of opinions or sentiments intended to demonstrate one's good character or social conscience or the moral correctness of one's position on a particular issue.”

I don’t think virtue signalling is exclusive to left wing ideas, however the left do have more of a focus on progressive change, so it’s going to be more likely in left leaning people

And so yeah, I guess wearing a poppy could be considered a form of virtue signalling

Virtue signalling is an attack slogan that some people have adopted to go after stuff they don't like.

You can tell by its uneven application that it's not serious. It's got all the intellectual merit of "go my football team, your football team sucks"

Travelling

It can be, both are similar. However virtue signalling is down to the intent used.

Often "virtue signalling" is down to trying to win favour with somebody. They don't actually care, businesses are the biggest culprits. Pride month for exmple, I'm fine with it and all that, glad that people celebrate it, but the way businesses use it to their own advantage is a form of virtue signalling. A chance to gain and appear "bigger and better" by doing so.

The problem is when it's used against individuals, particularly online.

When it gets thrown around on Fab, for example, who the hell knows what a user's actual intent is? Maybe they mean it? (And particularly in places like the forums, where a lot of people have "pick me" energy, surely a lot of what a lot of people are doing is trying to signal their virtue, even if that virtue is a big cock etc rather than a social cause?)

Slightly guilty as charged! But I genuinely wondered what people think

This is what I think. haha

I roll my eyes whenever I see the expression. I think it's mostly "I'm right wing and I don't like what you're saying". cool story bro

Whaley Bridge,Nr Buxton,

Wearing a poppy isn't virtue signalling,it's a mark of respect, especially for those of us who have lost family.

How do we know it is or isn't virtue signalling?

The right wing media went mental a few years ago because Corbyn didn't bow deeply enough or some shit, some of the poppies are bigger than others as if it's a dick measuring contest, it's become almost compulsory.

I'm sure for some it is a sign of respect, and I have no problem with that. But it's also become something of a circus.
