thank you for the replies..glad to see your all keeping the faith...was an avid allnighter goer in the past but 18 years of marriage to a non soulie curtailed that but now firmly back in the groove so to speak and also writing a novel which is about social changes in 60's black america and the huge output of recordings after the birth of motown which led to the rare souls scene in this country. p.m me if you want to know more....have interest from a film maker ...should be ready for publishing by late spring !

Hull

I got into Northern Soul back in the mid-90's when I ran a hotel in Hull.

There, we had a series of Northern Soul events with DJ's travelling in from all over the UK, as did their followers.

Wow, were those events popular and of all the events over the years I have worked on, those were the ones with absolutely no trouble whatsoever.

Plus the music was great too!

My Mum kind of brought my sister and I up on Northern Soul...she'd regularly go to Wigan Casino and one in Blackpool (can't remember the name!). I know her and a lot of her old facebook friends have started a monthly 70's reunion in Bolton which features a lot of Northern Soul music - think one of the DJ's from 'back in the day' DJ's on the night. I'm not the most knowledgeable on the music, but I do like it when I hear it

“Time Will Pass You By” by Tobi Legend, “Long After Tonight Is Over” by Jimmy Radcliffe, and “I’m On My Way” by Dean Parrish.

Five of us used to travel every weekend to an allnighter and sadly only me and one other from the gang remain alive today

keeping the faith and growing old disgracefully

Being a lifelong mod my path has crossed with northern soul, but i must admit to finding it a bit "samey".

There are many great tracks but playing it all night long can be dull. I much prefer to mix it up with lots of other styles, dancefloor jazz, boogaloo, hammond, R&B, British Beat etc. My current fave track though would have to be either Lou Lawton "Knick Knack Patty Wack" or The Showmen "Our Love Will Grow".

Well lets face it, it's the best music by far to have blasting out while driving.

West Wales and Cardiff

I've always been a massive music fan, but as I get older I find old, raw soul music is one of the forms of music that means more and more, while other stuff fades away. It's pretty much soul and classical (!) for me these days!

Just thought I'd mention - there's a great new (fictional) film of the northern soul scene coming out soon. I was given a sneak preview of it by someone who's worked on it and the footage looks amazing. He says it's a great film and he's more than happy to slag off films he's been involved with.

Some brill tunes in this thread. I love:

Shirley Ellis - Soul Time (got outbid on eBay for this yesterday. Prob a good thing given the cost!)

Willie Hutch - Lucky to be loved by You

Marlena Shaw - California Soul (bit overplayed these days maybe!)

I'm not sure the following are "pure" northern soul - not seen em on compilations. They capture it for me:

Mary Wells - Lay my Burden Down

Diana Ross - -Sunny Boy

The Supremes. - Stoned Love (this was the Stone Roses's walk on music at their gigs last year. Awesome to hear it in a field of 75,000 people).

Alice Clark - Don't You Care (brilliant, brilliant tune)

For a newer take on that sound, try:

Nicole Willis and the Soul Investigators - Feeling Free

Sharon Jones and the Dap kings - I just popped in to see what condition my condition was in.

Both are killer tunes.

Be very sure that Lay this burden down is a proper Northern tune. The other two are played out regularly at more open minded venues at least!!!
