My ex of ten years was an abusive piece of shit but I didn't see it at the time. He forced me into the closet (I'm transgender) and I cheated on him with my now wife and lord, couldn't be happier.

Cheating is never black and white after all.

Were you & your ex married and were there any kids involved?

We were engaged. And nope. Neither liked kids.

Given the myriad of reasons for embarking upon an affair, regardless of your personal moral stance on the subject; there’s always at least one or possibly two other people involved, whether they know it or not!

My experience is that ‘relationships that start out in the dark never see the light’, bonus points if you can name the song

We’re all human and nobody enjoys being disrespected, no matter the reasons!

Hopefully not. A cheater is like any other form of subhuman, they never deserve happiness.

In a perfect world, the punishment for those "humans" that cheat would be so severe even Mengele or ONI would say the punishment is too brutal.

Manchester-ish

I would read The State of Affairs by Esther Perel.

It's unusual for an affair to transition into a lasting relationship once the shiny wears off. The newness, excitement and feeling desired makes the affair seem special and the human brain exaggerates all that is wrong with the spouse to justify it. If the affair becomes an official relationship then it's very, very common for this cycle to repeat.
