And I know it

Today I went to pick up a few things. Someone in need asked for help. He smelled of booze but he asked for help with food. "Just a few quid,I swear" he said so I agreed. As we walked around the shop he said repeatedly "is it okay if I just get this"? It was just food stuff, chips, hash browns some chocolate etc. I said okay okay okay. My final bill was just over £30.

I want to believe I was just kind but one of my people is annoyed with me and says I allowed myself to be taken advantage of.

I think if you felt in your gut that that person needed the help and you were happy to do it then that is all that should matter.

If you do feel a little uneasy about it then take it as a lesson to be able to help in a different way next time that will leave you feeling more comfortable.

I think only you can know if you were taken advantage of. It’s true that Kindness is often mistreated by others. But here’s the thing, whether you were taken advantage of or not, what you did WAS kind, regardless. Try to focus on this and let the questions go. The world is a tiny bit better today because of you. That’s all that matters

You must feel he did take advantage if you are questioning yourself but that doesn't mean you did something wrong.

You did a good thing and shouldn't feel bad about it, I'd have done the same thing as I hate the thought of anyone going hungry.

As someone said above,maybe change how you help the next time, leave a certain amount of money at the till or something like that.

He won't be hungry tonight thanks to you

Its a good deed regardless.

I assume the £30 loss doesn't impact you, but it might have made a huge impact on that person. I would gladly gamble £30 on helping someone who's at rock bottom

It was your decision to help that person out and so I don't think it's really anyone elses business.

The way I see it is if you put yourself in that persons shoes and were in that much need of help, I'm sure you'd be appreciative if someone like you came along and helped.

You happily chose to let him collect all those food items, so no as you were aware of his actions at the time. If at any time you had said no and he carried on then it would be different.

Homeless people do what they need to survive, it's up to us to safeguard our boundaries, of how far we let them go regarding donations

It strikes me as live in an age where people publicly film themselves giving money, shoes, shopping and food to homeless people and publish it on YouTube and tik tok for everyone to praise. While privately people are telling those who do such things not to because they're all *insert addiction here* and are only taking advantage.

I once helped a stranger I saw in the parking lot at my vet, get his dog put down. Cost me £75. Ultimately I did it because the poor creature was suffering and it was the right thing to do.

The guy whose dog it was? Went on to send me unsolicited dick pix and stalked me until I had to report him.

No good deed goes unpunished but I still think I did the right thing. The only thing I’d change is I shouldn’t have given the man my number and told him I’d listen if he needed to talk about it.
