Had this discussion the other day. Well I say discussion, it was a poor attempt at explaining.

Anyway, Enthusiasm!

It's not always a good thing is it. A quiet, internal enthusiasm that is shown through what you are doing. We all like that right?

While an over the top enthusiasm, is disliked. You know the kind. Their attempt at doing something is both hindered and also overshadowed by the enthusiasm of doing it.

Enthusiasm alone can't make up for it all can it?

How do you feel about enthusiasm? Do you think it has two sides to it?

There's 'enthusiastic' and 'over enthusiastic'.

The difference is key.

I think too much enthusiasm with no ability to back it up is probably when it's bad!

Enthusiasm can't make up for something being terrible

Depends on what it is I think. Enthusiasm to learn e.g. in the workplace, is far better than someone lazy who knows how to do the job. But enthusiasm to the point they're nagging you constantly drives me demented.

So I guess there's a fine balance between being keen and an absolute load, so you actively try and avoid them. Maybe enthusiasm that doesn't drag others into it is the best kind?

I think this is exactly why my boss chose the word enthusiastic yesturday at my review… I drive him bonkers.

Somewhere In The Ether…

Enthusiasm coupled with optimism (and a skill set in the correct context) is good.

Over enthusiasm however, can be somewhat irksome to those around.

Carlisle usually

I think the only time enthusiasm really matters to me is when it comes to consent.

Though I suppose, I want the people I play with to be enthusiastic about me, in as much as not just a selection of willing orifices. But I'm a fairly stoic and unexpressive person a lot of the time, even when I'm super keen, so I don't expect a constant overexcited demonstration of the enthusiasm, I just need to know it's there

Oh for sure. There are guys who come across as desperate rather than enthusiastic. With enthusiasm they will match your efforts more. With desperation they overwelm with messages and get all upset if you haven't replied immediately.

People can be enthusiastic about something without becoming this joyful bouncy irritating force. I prefer subtle enthusiastic people, you know how to be.

Enthusiasm in itself is not a bad thing… I think some of the issues are people in effect just try to hard rather than just being themselves

People who just are so loud they can be overbearing…..

I like people who are enthusiastic. Passionate about something. Reading another's enthusiasm more often than not makes me smile, it's nice when people can be open about what it is that sparks joy for them.

Of course, over enthusiasm can be grating. I'd much rather see the odd glimmer of enthusing than it being constant, almost a facade of it.

Shush. Not enough you go quiet but enough that you don't type such nonsense. Your enthusiasm is endearing.

"I’m still not hugely sure I understood this so I’ll sit quietly and take notes "

I'm a bit confused too. I tend to only be enthusiastic about things I have the slightest hope of being good at or enjoying.

Apart from that time I had a go at a potter's wheel. I was so excited to try that and was utterly deflated when I was shit. Still salty.

See I’m enthusiastic about everything too! But I can’t quite grasp the concept of being over enthusiastic to a point where it’s a problem

Think of it a bit more like "show, don't tell" or similar to quiet confidence.

You can tell if somebody is enthusiastic about something. It shows through their enjoyment.

But some people go about enthusiasm, at least in terms of sex, which can be expressed in such a way that it ruins the moment. They are enjoying something but the expression of that enthusiasm overshadows the enjoyment.

Same. Is it the enthusiasm that's the problem or the fact that they're crap at whatever it is? And even if someone else would be better at doing something, how do you learn without trying?

I think I'm misunderstanding the example.

Yes but no. That's fake enthusiasm.

This isn't the best way to explain it either but when their effort is shifted so much from actually enjoying it, to almost make a point to show how enthusiastic they are in enjoying it.

Starting to get it. I mean it could be that whatever was happening before didn't do it for them so they *really* want you to know you're getting it right now. (general you not personal you)
