Just replaced 2 tyres for £180. Budget brand as I only do about 4k miles a year

Premium brand would have been £170 each.

How much do you pay for tyres and do you get budget or premuim?

I can’t shell out a bucket load of cash in one hit, so I take a few smaller hits at intervals.

After a dodgy incident in the wet with reasonably new budget tyres I now go premium with a high wet performance rating.

My car weighs close to 3 tonnes though. Would only go mid-range on the Focus.

Premium when company are paying, do lots of miles in all conditions so want that extra security, premium on sports bike as well, crazy money per how long the bike tyres last

Mitchelin Pilot sport 4s I should buy shares in as I recommend them that much. We have them on both our cars. Couldn’t have anything less as both are above 5l engines. Wouldn’t recommend budget tyres at all. A minimum of a midrange to provide semi decent grip on wet roundabouts is what I recommend to my customers

Mid-range for me, wouldnt go for some Chinese ditch-finders at all, but cant warrant spending over the odds, tyres are the only contact you have with the ground so I get very well rated mid-range and always have

I get the most expensive tyres I can afford. That little contact patch of black rubber is a big deal and there is a difference between cheap tyres and expensive tyres. Grip, durability, water displacement in the rain.

Always check the date stamp on the sidewall it will say for example 0912 which means the 9th week of 2012

Most part worn tyres are ancient and the tread is off I wouldn’t risk my life on a ten year old tyre

Because they are budget doesn't mean they are rubbish. They are still A or B rated for wet grip and braking. They just don't have a fancy pants brand name..

I always buy premium brand tyres . Its the only thing connecting your car to the road , same goes with brakes . One thing Ive never understood is people who own 20k / 30k cars and they run the cheapest tyres available .

I always buy premium brand tyres . Its the only thing connecting your car to the road , same goes with brakes . One thing Ive never understood is people who own 20k / 30k cars and they run the cheapest tyres available .

I have found the times I’ve used budget tyres the difference isn’t so much with their performance but with the life of them.

They have performed very well, just not lasted.

I wouldn't personally go cheap on tyres. Performance aside, better tyres are quieter and generally last longer in my experience.

Last month I changed all 4, cost around 900.

Its all realtive as depends on car, size of tyre. Recently changed ours on the Range Rover as i got a screw near the edge, ie non safe repair area - so i repalced all four - as we only cover about 4k miles per annum in the big car used to trips to family etc, had 1/2 years life left in the tyres easily but i want 4 of the same make/design - so went mid rang but i look at braking in the wet and dry, evrything else comes second, paid 245 per tyre fitted

Got part worn tyres not long ago. The grip looked good and it was only until I had my service when the mechanic mentioned that the tyres were fitted the wrong way.

It seems there was a chunk missing out the tyre wall were it must have hit the kerb on the previous car it was fitted to and the tyre garage fitted the tyre so the kerb side was on the inside of the wheel.

Should have reported them to trading standards.

Never go for part worn now.

I have found the times I’ve used budget tyres the difference isn’t so much with their performance but with the life of them.

Some premium branded tyres like uniroyal rainsport dont last very long either but the difference between premium and budget on the road in wet/ icy conditions and even in normal dry conditions for breaking and grip is astronomical. Ive had cars that came with budget tyres on them and nearly spun out a few times at roundabouts at low speeds.

From A-E wet grip performance diff is 7%.

Always look for A/b for wet grip.

Ive paid £218 for 2 premium tyres for my SUV, from Costco who have promos on. Current one on Goodyear tyres. Saved £60 for a pair.

Despite dozens & dozens of tyre brands on offer, there are only about 5 or 6 companies that make them all. Except the Chinese junk.

Budgets are generally softer rubber compounds using older tread patterns cascaded down from the premium brands within each tyre company once they've made the money from them. They wear quicker but as most tyres are now made to degrade faster for environmental reasons, harder wearing tyres will develop age cracks in between the treads long before they go bald. So you still need to replace them before they're worn out. False economy.

Mid range best of both worlds.

Also worth noting that electric cars destroy tyres prematurely because they weigh so much & scrub them. Great for the environment eating tyres faster, if you can afford to insure one now after the recent huge hikes in premium renewals!

I only put on my car the recommended tyres for the car as fitted new. I had a conversation at tyre fitters about fitting different make / cheaper tyres. Yes depending on car you will get more wear etc. Plus if in an accident and not correct type tyres fitted . Insurance can be invalidated. Best to read insurance small print about tyres.

Well since a lot of part worns come from cars involved in accidents they can have unseen damage to the sidewalls which can fail with no warning. I decided I wasn't prepared to take that risk so gave up on them.

Yes they are but if you look at the materials when they get recycled the budget tyres aren’t in the same league. The amount of steel wire in them and the quality of the steel wire is orders of magnitude apart.

Also if you look at stopping distances and lateral grip there is no comparison. That’s down to the differences in the rubber compound as well which you won’t notice unless you test the same car with different tyres.

The way other people drive I’m happy to pay for minimum stopping distance and maximum swerve ability.

Part worns have been mentioned and without scanning them you have no way whatsoever of knowing if the steel wires within are intact and in good order. Personally I think they should be banned as a threat to life.

Avon ZX7's all round.

Usually around £500 for all corners. Michelin are a little more expensive and last little longer but the wet performance on Avons is far superior.

Brakes and rubber is the most important thing on a car after the driver and passengers.

I have always went for Uniroyal Rainsports, great tyre and a sensible price. Considering how little contact each tyre actually has with the road and our lovely weather i want something that handles wet conditions very well.

Would never buy budget as I have no faith they will grip or stop if I need them too.

Ive been driving on part worns (which I didnt think you could get anymore) and budget tyres my whole driving history. And I crank up the miles. I put my faith in the fact that they must have to be at a road worthy standard even as budgets. The tyre angels are hopefully watching over me.

Only do about 5k a year now so I buy a decent budget or mid range for around 70 to 80 quid, I need to do mine at minute and am shopping around
