The Parliament on the Isle of Man, fameous for its annual motorcycle riding has voted to approve assisted dying for terminally ill patients who want to end their suffering. If this goes ahead will England follow? Will there be a tourist industry of people heading there to end it all? What's going on here guy? It's all over the news

It will be a cheaper trip than Switzerland.Its time our politicians had the backbone to allow it here.In June and July this year two friends killed themselves after a terminal diagnosis,they couldn't afford Switzerland so they did it the hard way,hanging.

Maybe if a clinic was offering COVID as a means, then the current lot would allow it for the elderly..

We have always had the power to end suffering for pets and animals, yet have been denied the ability to do it for ourselves.

This is a much needed step forwards.

There'll be no 'tourism' involved. It doesn't work like that. At present Switzerland is the only option and that's beyond the means of many financially.

It's long overdue in the UK and any civilised nation.

Well the word sex tourism is bandied about and why not death tourism. Families can take their loved one to the Isle of Man and stay over for a few days and enjoy what the island has to offer

Its about time the UK Govts woke up and moved on with the times.

We dont let our animals suffer we take the decision to humanely end their suffering why cant the same not be done for our loved ones. The stress and anguish suffered for weeks, months or years is so hard and punishing on all esp the person who is terminal. Their quality of life is not what they had.

Its heartbreaking x

A friend of mine did this not long ago.

Found out he was terminally ill, given about 12 months so basically he just quit work, went traveling with his wife, did as much of the things he wanted while he could until he reached the point where life wasn’t getting pleasant- at which point he said his goodbyes and headed off to Switzerland for a final trip.

I really can’t see how anybody can object in a situation like this, he knew what he was doing, was in control, had a great few months and avoided living his last few weeks or months in pain and misery - as well as that being inflicted on his family.

Luckily, he was living abroad, so his family were able to be with him at the end without being persecuted with some insane charge of assisting in his death.

We really need to sort this shit out, I’ve seen a couple of people have some horrible ends to their lives from disease, why the fuck we can’t recognise this as a valid option if safeguards are in place is unfathomable! Seems to be some sort of religious hangover- fine if you’re a paid up member, but those of us who don’t believe fairy stories should have the option to control our last days

The second reading of this bill is being discussed in Tynwald at some point, which i think should be past in the house of keys at some point. People should have a right to determine how thier last and in some case painful days should end.

I've previously agreed with the sentiments people have shared here. But then I saw what Canada has done.

"Last year, Canada changed its assisted death law, permitting people with chronic, “grievous and irremediable” conditions and physical disabilities to commit suicide, even if they are not terminally ill." New York Times

Unlike Sex tourism where the person comes home, there’s nothing “Tourist” about going to another country to die, to imply that it is, is somewhat degrading and at worst, dismissive of those who made the ultimate decision.

Really hope we get that here, probably never happen but would like the option to be extended to those not terminally Ill but unable to care for themselves, personally given the choice of going into a home and having everything I’ve worked for taken off me to pay for it to be unhappy rotting away in a home I’d sooner pay a few grand to die peacefully and still be able to give my kids everything I built up for them

I think Canada have made the right decision. Everyone should have the right to end their life if they choose, and some people actually cannot manage this alone due to "chronic, “grievous and irremediable” conditions and physical disabilities".

Until it becomes the choice of someone else as opposed to the person themselves, I'd be happy to head down this road.

People who are suffering from illness absolutely should have the right to decide if they are of sound mind to do so. It becomes a little bit more complicated when it comes to mental health as when things get bad your mind can go to that place but if there's a chance for us to get better, that should be the first and foremost option.
